I’m not denying that the dog was showing aggression. I’m simply saying the initial response by the police was out of line.

Question for you: Do you think there initial response was reasonable or do you think they could have handled it better?

When I first saw the video, I thought the guy and dog were hapless victims, and the police were way out of line. But with the extra information about loud music interfering with police work, then the added shitstirring, I think the police did OK. Maybe not handled perfectly, but yeah, the outrage seems a bit misplaced now.

Out here they shot two four month old Mountain Lion kittens (who weighed less than my housecats) and were starving. They were cowering under a porch. ☹

Again I admit to being a complete coward, but I’m amazed at how the entire neighborhood is out there filming and laughing like it’s a barbecue or something. Do they just not care about potential police brutality? Or even stray bullets? If there’s a huge police presence and a manhunt I’m locking the doors, pulling the blinds, and hiding like a little girl.

> Seriously? You are dealing with armed robbery suspects and some idiot rolls up in his car with the windows rolled down and the stereo blasting, you order him to turn the music off because you can’t hear what is going on, and instead of turning it off … he parks and gets out and walks his dog and films possible “civil rights violations”???
>
> And you think the deciding factor in armed robber capture interference is if you violate a noise ordinance? He was being a total asshole and he has a history of being a total asshole and his dog paid the price this time.

The cops were “dealing with armed robbery suspects” by walking calmly up and down the street and lounging around half a block from the intersection with subject and dog. The whole area was taped off and there were a number of police vehicles in this intersection alone. The “armed robbery suspects” were apparently located at some remove from our subject. I saw no evidence that anyone told him to turn his music off, as no one approached him during the length of the video. But I am willing to accept that someone may have done so at some point. Clearly he was being provocative.

But it’s ludicrous to claim some overwhelming police emergency situation here directly related to, or exacerbated by, his musical volume. The cops that arrested him walked down the block to his intersection, and took him into custody, then seemingly began to search him, all at considerable distance from his car. If the music was really such a big deal, such an interference to “dealing with armed robbery suspects”, somebody would seemingly have paid more attention to the car. But no, four cops worked to detain a completely cooperative subject and nobody even looked at the car. I couldn’t hear any music, but I could hear the dog bark. If it was really such a distraction at the other end of the block, seems somebody would have done something about it besides arresting the owner of the audio equipment.

My reference to noise ordinances wasn’t to compare them to interference with an armed robber capture, but merely to note his – and my – right to play loud music unless ordinance or exigent circumstance prohibits. Since nobody seemed to be doing any actual armed robber capturing, I’m not really seeing the exigent circumstances. Want any of your straw back?

I agreed upthread that he was being spiteful, but so were the cops. Neither assholish behavior is sufficient cause for the dog to die. I’m still at 50/50 in the responsibility department.

I dispute 4 and 5 and I dispute that any of the five are proof of aggression. My pitbull barks for only one reason: she wants attention. Jumping out of a car means nothing except that the dog wanted out of the car and close to his owner. The dog ran towards his owner, not the officers, and stopped short, then started sniffing around. The dog did not “lunge”, he tried to jump on an officer that was approaching him with her arm outstretched toward him.

And as for “response to owner being arrested” no, response to commotion around owner, from whom he was separated, which got him excited.

Excited is not aggressive.
Movement is not aggressive.
Jumping is not aggressive.
Stopping short and sniffing is for sure not aggressive.
Barking is not aggressive.
Jumping out of the car is not aggressive.

Snarling is aggressive. He didn’t snarl.
Growling is aggressive. He didn’t growl.
Snapping/attempting to bite is aggressive. He didn’t snap or try to bite.

He was not aggressive. At all. Even a little.

I call bullshit on all you cop sympathisers. Cops here in L.A HAVE BECOME THE NEW THUGS. They are the new gangbangers the biggest gang in L.A is LAPD. They kill indiscriminately and no one holds them accountable. I can’t remeber theast gang murder because their hasn’t been any. But everyday a cop kill an innoncent person. And I mean innoncent no exageration guilty of nothing and now this bloodlust has extended to mans bestfriend. Truly outrages.

Of course this thread blew up before I came back to it and this question is way back in the thread. Anyway, I was saying for myself, a dog would have to make contact with me before I would think shooting it was the only way to go. I see no circumstance in that video that would make me feel I needed to shoot that dog. I also have years of experience and training reading dog body language. While I don’t expect police to have my kind of experience, I don’t think it’s unreasonable to expect a day’s worth of training for people who approach homes that will have dogs in them a large percentage of the time.

That last lunge by the dog before he was shot was because _the cop made a too-fast lunging move toward him first_. All any of them needed to do was leave him alone for a couple minutes so he could figure out everything was OK. He was initially agitated because he saw his owner getting manhandled, which any dog would do. He was not being an “attack dog” he was not “attacking” anyone, and he was not being aggressive.

So the dog was agitated and protecting his owner, but not aggressive. I don’t see how those statements are compatible. Even if the dog was purely protecting his owner, in order to do so he would have to take an aggressive demeanor.

It was horrible watching that dog die his twitching, leg-kicking death. It was horrible hearing the owner’s pleas to “don’t shoot my dog”. It was equally horrible that an active massive police investigation turned into a picnic and laughing atmosphere by people filming the ongoings.

That said, the owner of that dog is a douchebag, especially given his previous record of intentionally provoking the police. The owner of the dog is to blame for the incident. Poor dog, stupid, race and cop-baiting human. Sorry about your luck asshole.

Since his owner was under arrest, the dog would continue to see his owner manhandled.

Or should the police release his owner in order to calm the dog?

Did you read any of the witness interviews that detailed exactly what happened before the video started?

Did you have the audio portion of the video on? The audio was very clear.

The two men making the video were clearly focusing on him and clearly repeating some of his earlier remarks. He was heckling the cops.

He had a confrontation with the cops and decided to get out of his car and walk his dog while filming the cops instead of turning off his music. Then the two guys decided they were probably going to get something memorable so they decided to film him. Is that your definition of “straw”? Why do you think the camera was focused on him as he was walking back and forth instead of anyone else? What do you think the remarks about the cops and him were referring to? Could it be they were anticipating a confrontation?

What exactly do you think they meant when they said what do you think will happen if that dog gets out? They sure called that one.

Douchebag pushed his luck too far this time and his poor dog paid for it.

For all the people standing up for those cops-YOU OBVIOUSLY ARE NOT QUITE RIGHT IN THE HEAD. Clearly you did not annalyze the video and see what happened. Yes this is as well the owners fault but what happened to him and his dog is not right. And just because it is a dog doesnt mean noone should care because to some people their pets are family. So stop there and do not categorize this dog you ignorant dweebs. Cops believe because they have a badge their dicks are ten inches bigger and they can do whatever the hell they want to do. These dumb fucks need to be stopped because they keep getting away with this all because the people who bow down to them and stand up for them you followers. These cops were so undertrained. The dog was barking and thats it not once did it even touch one of the cops. The one that shot him moved towards the dog seeing how the dog was barking so clearly it was his fault the dog lunged at him (IGNORANT MOVE PIG), and still the dog did not touch the cop or bite him. The pussy cop fucking shot the dog for no reason because he was afraid. When clearly everyone can see the dog was doing nothing but BARKINGG!!! ALL YOU COP FOLLOWERS WHO STAND UP FOR THEM AFTER THIS I WISH ALL HELL ON YOU. YOU WILL SOON SEE HOW THESE COPS CARE ABOUT NOTHING BUT THEIR PAYCHECKS. =D JUSTICE FOR MAX THE ROTTWEILER. PEACE OUT.

Also, you can clearly see the house that the SWAT team is waiting for suspects to come out of- it’s just past the cop cars, before the SWAT van- the one with the large contingent of heavily armed police on the porch- so not even remotely a significant distance away. And the music is clearly audible… I don’t know how anyone viewing the video could miss it.

It looked like the cop was attempting to either grab the dog’s collar or pick up the dropped leash so that they could get control of the dog. Honestly, in an already tense situation, with a known confrontational, lawsuit-prone suspect, I can really understand why the sight of a large, lunging dog would cause a knee-jerk reaction to protect oneself. And I say that as someone with extensive experience with dog training, including with abused and aggressive dogs. There’s something about seeing TEETH coming at you that shuts off all rational parts of your brain.

I’m going with 80-20 owner/cops. Heartbreaking and avoidable, but understandable.

It’s called cordoning off a block. Do you really not understand that this is where these particular cops were assigned and that there were other cops assigned to other tasks in dealing with this particular set-up?

those guys may have been immature but cops arent supposed to be immature. The guy was not harming anyone just shouting things (hello freedom of speech) nothing wrong with that. The cops reacted with immature attitudes because they felt they had to be the top dog. "lets arest this guy because we are taking his “words” defensively and we cant be belittled by anyone. Tearssss.
