That’s the book; the movie changed it to 1935.

AD 33 is taken but I think that an epic like [Ben-Hur](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ben-Hur_%281959_film%29) (1959) should not be omitted, so we should go for when the action starts and remains for awhile, in AD 26; as an option, Ben-Hur tells the Roman Commander in the movie how long he was in the galleys, so the sea battle and his freedom in Rome was good chunk of the movie and takes place 3 years later in AD 29.

**Django Unchained** moved to 1858.
Since we are not trying to pare down the best movie of each year, everybody’s favorite 1986 movie, **Hot Tube Time Machine** has been re-added to the list.

I’m gonna go search the web, but is there now movie depicting the California Gold Rush of 1848-1851-ish? The Gold Rush by Charlie Chaplin, perhaps? Anyhow, I’m’na go look.

I can’t seem to find **The Conquest of 1453**. Not sure if the 1453 should be in the title. I did find a movie called **Conquest** that is a 1996 Hungarian film about the Magyar settlement in Hungary in AD 896. And that baby’s gettin’ added to the list! But if somebody can post the link to the 1453, that would help. 'Cause you know, I’m the judge, jury and executioner of this thread! 😛

There yet another period piece called **Conquest** that was released in 1937 (per Wiki) involving Napoleon Bonepart, but I haven’t yet nailed down a specific date for it. Looking like somewhere between 1806-1810.

_“Between the time when the oceans drank Atlantis and the rise of the sons of Aryas, there was an age undreamed of. > The Hyborian Age is a fictional period within the artificial mythology created by Robert E. Howard, in which the sword and sorcery tales of Conan the Barbarian and Red Sonja are set.
>
> The word “Hyborian” is a transliterated contraction by Howard of the Ancient Greek “hyperborean”, referring to a “barbaric dweller beyond the boreas (north wind).”[1] Howard stated that the geographical setting of the Hyborian Age is that of our Earth, but in a fictional version of a period in the past, c. Upper Paleolithic (40,000 to 10,000 B.C.).[2]
>
> The reasons behind the invention of the Hyborian Age were perhaps commercial: Howard had an intense love for history and historical dramas; however, at the same time, he recognized the difficulties and the time-consuming research needed in maintaining historical accuracy. By conceiving a timeless setting – a vanished age – and by carefully choosing names that resembled our history, Howard avoided the problem of historical anachronisms and the need for lengthy exposition.[3]

Very smart, Mr. Howard, I will go for what the reviewer at [IMDb reports](http://www.imdb.com/reviews/131/13139.html):

The evacuation of British forces was in May-June 1940. Does most of the movie take place the year before?

Chaplin’s “The Gold Rush” is set in the Klondike gold rush ca. 1896-1899. Don’t know if the year is specified.

I pegged The Gold Rush as belonging to 1897 since that was the start of the “Klondike Stampede” and the iconic images of prospectors climbing the Chilkoot Pass in the snow, shown in the opening of the movie.

>

**The Conquest of 1453** is an alternate English title for **Fetih 1453**.

No, you’re right - I wasn’t concentrating. Sorry!

No worries. Then _Dunkirk_ can join _Atonement_ as a 1940 movie - the evacuation is prominently featured in the latter film, as well.

Although 1910 has Mary Poppins, another favorite and more historically based movie should be added:

> Those Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines or How I Flew from London to Paris in 25 Hours and 11 Minutes is a 1965 British epic period comedy film that satirises the early years of aviation. Directed and co-written by Ken Annakin, the film stars an international ensemble cast, including Stuart Whitman, Sarah Miles, Robert Morley, Terry-Thomas, James Fox, Red Skelton, Benny Hill, Jean-Pierre Cassel, Gert Fröbe, and Alberto Sordi.

> Running at over two hours’ length, _ **Those Magnificent Men In their Flying Machines** _ … (most cinemas abbreviated the full title and it was eventually re-released with the shorter title) was treated as a major production, one of only three full-length 70 mm Todd-AO Fox releases in 1965 with an intermission and musical interlude spliced into the original screenings.[8] Due to the Todd-AO process, Those Magnificent Men In their Flying Machines was considered an exclusive feature shown in deluxe Cinerama venues where customers needed reserved seats purchased ahead of time.[29] Considered one of the most popular exemplars of the '60s “epic comedy” genre, it was an immediate box-office success, far out-grossing the similar car race comedy, The Great Race (1965) and even eclipsing the perennial favourite, It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963).[16] Audience reaction both in first release and even today, is nearly universal in assessing the film as one of the “classic” aviation films.[30]
