Solomon and Sheba (1959), was a big hit in the day, some critics point it now as one of the worst movies but IMDb gives it 6 out of 10 stars. The beginning of the movie does mention that the action begins 1000 years before the birth of Christ, so:

A quick check and all I find is Cousin Bette, based on Balzac’s novel, and set in Paris on the brink of the revolutions.

I was also surprised to find no prominent movie about John Brown’s abortive 1859 raid at Harper’s Ferry.
The Gold Rush is already listed for 1897. Although the gold strike itself took place in 1896, the rush didn’t start until the spring in the following year, so I pegged that as the year in which the movie is set.
I’ve been thinking about this.
That was the original intent as stated in the OP, and then the idea seemed to fall off, maybe just because we don’t have to have a definitive movie for each year to appreciate the thread and build on it. I made an attempt to revive it, but I don’t know that my heart was in it other than as an effort to keep the thread going. Ultimately, it just doesn’t seem like a very important matter and maybe that’s as it should be. And certainly there are certain years where it really is not possible to have a definitive movie (ex. 1962 with Animal House and American Graffiti).
Plus – and this is a pretty big deal from a maintenance standpoint – copying and pasting removes the coding, so the lower-sized fonts get bounced unless you copy and paste the list, including coding, to your desktop. And then you pretty much need to be the only one who updates the list.
Anyhow, all IMHO.
