Inquiry regarding 12 Monkeys: Per Wiki, Cole originally goes back to 1990 – when he first meets/kidnaps Madeline Stowe’s character – but the “present” (however you define it; I’m referring to the post-apocalyptic time frame) isn’t really stated in terms of the actual year. But the larger question is, was the movie really about 1996? (Thinking…)
Yeah, I guess 1996. But it seems like the movie’s “home base” (for lack of better words) happens in the post-apocalyptic period, that feels like the real setting… but not really where the plot/conflict happens. It’s a judgement call.
I have to remove Back to the Future II in 1985. Makes me feel dirty allowing it.
According to the list of goofs in IMDB, the date is ambiguous. The story evidently takes place during the Confederate invasion of New Mexico in 1862. However, mentions of Lee and Grant imply a later date, and of Andersonville Prison Camp indicate it’s no earlier than 1864. Apparently one of the other graves in the cemetery is marked 1864. There are lots of anachronisms in various artifacts. Notably the Cavalry flags have 50 stars, and a car can be seen in the background of one scene.
I would say no definite date can be assigned to TGTBATU, so another movie should be found for 1864.

I would recommend that Snow Falling on Cedars replace Men in War for 1950. While men in war is a decent film it covers only the actions of few men on one day. Snow Falling on Cedars is comprehensive in covering a story that evolves over time and ends in 1950. But it does a decent job of capturing the events of 1950 in small town.

I won’t fight it out but Local Hero was made in 1983 and it sure seems like 1983 to me. Yes, most of it is set in an impossibly quaint Scottish seaside village. But it begins and ends in Houston.
Every time I pass what’s now JP Morgan Chase Tower, I remember it provided the exterior & lobby for Knox Oil. But Mr Happer’s office was in one of the top floors of Pennzoil Place.
On our hero’s bulletin board is a flyer for Captan John’s–an Art Deco seafood restaurant & oyster bar restored beautifully for the excessive 80’s. (It’s been demolished.) And when he opens his door to the Houston night, I know that feeling of a hot, wet, none too clean washcloth plastered over the face–with traffic noise & a siren in the distance. So far from that Scottish dream…
