Animals is probably the album I turn to most often, but ObC has “Wots…uh the Deal” which is pretty much the most beautiful thing ever. The guitar bit of that song is enough to make it rise above everything else. IMHO, YMMV, etc.
Speaking of Storm, his Mind Over Matter is an excellent retrospective of his work. (I love the cover, taken at “The Wave”, a truly amazing place.)
The December '09 issue of Classic Rock Magazine had an interesting article on the travails of filming The Wall. The cover is a neat 3D mashup of Floyd album covers.
Apropos of the subject matter being discussed in this thread, here’s an e-postcard I made a while back. My brother and I were on a week-long Britrail adventure, and, as we were passing a certain power station, he pulled a little surprise out of his pack…
I chose Pulse as well, for exactly this reason.
Except, of course, that I believe it really qualifies as a separate album like the rest. I was made to purchase it seperately, using seperate money for it than I did for the other albums. If it were just given to me by the band because I had many of their other albums, then I can see DCnDC’s logic. But it wasn’t, so I don’t.
Also, the blinky light continues to score babes.
Penultimate means second to last. Which kind of fits, but I don’t think it’s what you were going for.
I’m going against the common wisdom and voting for The Final Cut. There isn’t a great single song on it, but as an album, I think it’s the best. It was a tough call between FC and WYWH.
I can’t believe how much love Animals is getting. I thought I was the only one.
One of my favorite album covers: The Orb Live 93.
Didn’t really have to think too much about this to vote. But if Dark Side were not an option, it would be much tougher. There are so many great choices, but I’d probably go with The Division Bell. That’s the one I’ve been playing most lately. There’s a lot of good stuff on it, but the last part of What Do You Want From Me is Pink Floyd at their Floydiest. It’s like they finally found their sound. (I’m going to get blasted for this, I know.) And Wearing the Inside Out is a real treat.
The hard thing about a poll like this is that they had three or four distinct periods in their career. The lads who did Piper are not the band that did Division Bell. It’s like asking what’s a better album, Help or Abbey Road.
I voted for The Wall. DSOTM is just completely ruined for me due to overexposure but I will agree that it is also an outstanding album. Wish and Animals are great too, but a notch below.
I liked *Final Cut *quite a bit but the political references are dated.
I also like Division Bell, same band or not, for sure not equal to the first tier albums.
I’ve not heard any pre-*Dark Side *albums in decades, I might like them more now.
“And if the band you’re in starts playing different tunes
I’ll see you on the dark side of the moon.”
Another thing Animals had going for it, was the advertising campaign, which consisted of the album cover and the words: ‘Oink, oink. Woof woof. Baaa.’, and nothing else. Brilliant
Dark Side Of The Moon, Wish You Were Here, and Animals are Pink Floyd for me.
The Wall and The Final Cut might say Pink Floyd on their covers, but they’re purely Roger Waters in my mind now. I love them and what Roger was saying and asking in them.
I chose Animals if only because immediately after I got the CD, I got the flu. Spent the next three or four days straight, under the blankets, with Animals on repeat. It’s beyond burned into my brain, it’s probably encoded into my DNA now.
CMC fnord!
Shit…you’re right. I meant ultimate.
Stupid pen.
I would have to say that Animals is my favorite Pink Floyd album. Followed very closely by Piper, Saucer full of Secrets, and Meddle.
I had a hard time deciding between:
The Zombie At The Gates Of Dawn
Atom Heart Zombie
Obscured By Zombies
The Dark Side Of The Zombie
A Momentary Lapse Of Zombies
Several Species of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together in a Cave and Grooving with a Zombie.
No, with a Celt!

And it’s high time that it got at least one vote.
