I’ve always heard it was given to Jamie Lee Curtis for the first…what was it…Halloween? Something like that.
Recently read about the Wilhelm scream.
There’s another scream that I’m interested in. In StarCraft, the flame-throwing human soldiers use this scream. It’s a loud blood-curdling HWAARRRGH!!! It was also used in the intro music of Ah! Real Monsters, an animated series. I also remember hearing this scream in several movies. Would anyone know what I’m talking about?
I know that scream. It always sounded to me like, “Yeearrrgghh!” and seemed to be associated with zombies and the undead. I’d like to find out the story behind that one, too.
Yeah, but James Cameron is supposed to have directed it, or at least part of it. And you get to see Richie Cunningham’s sister squoooshed!
For some reason, I’m reminded of a scene in Night of the Bloody Apes. (No, it’s not a good movie, despite having female Mexican wrestlers and open-heart surgery footage.) The ape-man is loose in the world, and he approaches a female Victim (not a major character, only cannon fodder) in the park and attacks her.
Instead of the usual (for this kind of movie) few token struggles and rapid lapse into unconsciousness, she fights back, kicking and screaming and flailing at him like a madwoman!
Surprised the heck out of me. I sat there, stunned, and thought, “Whoa! It’s like he stuck his hand into a blender! You go, girl!”
Okay, I just thought of a real one. In the movie Krull, when the aliens get killed, a wormy sort of thing comes out of their armor and they let out some high pitched throaty yell. It was pretty creepy. I heard it again in the video game Fade to Black and had a devil of a time placing it.
Heh. Yeah I guess that was pretty cool, too. Also, Taffee’s scream comes while she is being eaten by an alien, who is considerate enough to eat her clothes first. Still silly, but not a complete waste of time.
Well, a bit creepy when you consider that the giant caterpillar is supposed to be raping her. Silliest-looking rape in the history of cinema, though.
Ick. I never picked up on that. I was far too young to be watching that movie.
I think the best scream was Fry in the “Anthology of Interest” episode where Leela becomes more impulsive and starts murdering people.
[spoiler]
Leela now has to do something really impulsive. Scene opens on Fry and Leela in bed.
Leela: “So Fry, how do you like the new impulsive me?” (turns off the light)
Fry: “Aaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh!”
Fry: “I really like it!”

Probably doesn’t count as Sci-Fi, but one of my favorites is the episode of “The Adventures of Superman” when Superman leaves the gangster (played by Jack Weston!) and his girlfriend on top of a mountain because they’ve discovered his identity. They try to climb down, slip, and fall, letting loose with what has to be one of the most bloodcurdling screams I’ve ever heard!
BTW, Cal , almost any woman can scream convincingly–a good male scream is hard to come by!
What, no mention of Patricia Owens’ iconic scream in “The Fly”??
Legend has it that the director didn’t show her the “fly head” before shooting the scene, in order to get a more genuine reaction.
