That he had to wait until he was out of office to be useful? Taft was a Supreme Court justice,though, I think that’s pretty good. And Teddy Roosevelte caused Wilson to be elected (although unintentionally), so that’s pretty good. ---

No one seems to remember that Carter got us out of a pretty nasty recession, and pretty darn quickly. He may have been weak on foreign policy, but he kicked butt, domestically. I, on the other hand, had completely forgotten Taft (and I don’t think I’m alone, in this). But, while that’s _something_, I don’t think it takes much for an ex-President to land a seat on the bench. And, it really only benefitted him. But, I’ll give it to you, anyway. I don’t remember the TR story, either, but he gets a free pass just for having created the National Park system. I guess I should have said half-century.
