Cartoon Network has old cartoons playing all night this week. One of those cartoons is Snagglepuss. I was talking to someone about whether Snagglepuss is a gay male lion, a female lion, or just a feminine male lion.

I think Snagglepuss is just a female lion. I think so because she does not have a mane. As far as I know, all male lions have a full mane. But then again, lions are also not pink.

But, he wears a bowtie which is a male trait. But then again, since it is a circus lion it could be dressed by a trainor just to look nice.

Anyway, what do you think?

Thanks

Do other characters on the show ever use a pronoun in refernce to Snagglepuss? That’s the best way I can think of to settle the question.

I always perceived Snagglepuss as a male. His voice register is consistent with that, female cartoon characters, other than obvious vamps, have higher pitched voices. His voice has a non-macho timbre, but I saw that as not so much effeminate as patterned after the Cowardly Lion (Wizard of Oz).

I think some people have yelled “get him” before.

But, some people use the word _him_ when referring to men or women, so that is not really 100% concrete evidence.

That’s the reason for no mane.

Young male lions – and, for that matter, some adults, especially in East Africa – do not have manes.

I’m pretty sure Snagglepuss is male, based on a partial memory I have of him falling in love with a (clearly female) lioness at some point. I can’t believe they would have had a lesbian lion in a cartoon ion the '60s, so I have to assume he’s a he.

Did you know that 10% of all cartoon lions are gay?

I think maybe Cafe Society is a better place for this thread, so I’ll send it over there.

I also thought he was a mountain lion/puma/painter/catamount/panther/…

Most recent issue of National Geographic has an article on maneless lions of E. Afr.

So, I think we have proven that he is in fact a male lion. I admit that I was proven wrong.

So now that we know he is male, would you say he is gay or just feminine?

I always thought Snagglepuss was patterned after Paul Lynde, making him in my mind a gay male mountain lion. After all, 10% of all cartoon animals are gay. [Rosie](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=107298&highlight=rosie) says so! 😉

Before he got his own series, Snagglepuss guest-starred in other Hanna-Barbera cartoons. He was an actor stranded in Jellystone Park, which means, I suppose, that his behavior was not effeminate but . . . ummm . . . theatrical. Theatrical! Flamboyant, yes, but not feminine.

Our snaggly protagonist suffered a mammoth crush on a mountain lioness who wore a dress and carried a parasol; she, however, though swayed by flattery seemed largely immune to his charms. Sigh. Like Yogi Bear’s romance with Cindy Bear, this relationship stalled early.

Yogi, yes: And the OP’s question reasserts itself. Even if you don’t enjoy outing cartoon characters, you may wonder why the self-professed agogee of ursine intelligence kept only one bed in his cave. Did he think he could hide from us? When they hibernated, where did Boo Boo sleep?

I think we know.

* * *

And let’s not advert to the relationship(s) among Yippee, Yappy, and Yahooey . . . .
