US Constitution, Article II, section 1: “The electors shall meet in their respective states, and vote by ballot for two persons, of whom one at least shall not be an inhabitant of the same state with themselves.” Amendment XII: “The electors shall meet in their respective states and vote by ballot for President and Vice-President, one of whom, at least, shall not be an inhabitant of the same state with themselves…” So it seems it would be possible for two people from the same state to be pres and VP, just not by election. Were the VP to die or resign, his or her replacement, who is appointed by the pres and confirmed by Congress under Amendment XXV, section 2: “Whenever there is a vacancy in the office of the Vice President, the President shall nominate a Vice President who shall take office upon confirmation by a majority vote of both Houses of Congress.” There doesn’t seem to be anything in the Constitution requiring a difference of state in this case. Plus, Carol could be registered to vote in a different state. ---
