Officials in Butte County delivered a double dose of good news on Camp Fire recovery at a Monday press conference: The number of both the missing and the dead has decreased.

The number of the missing dropped to 11 people, while the death toll was revised from 88 to 85. How? Investigators determined that human remains collected in three separate bags, all given their own case number, belonged to the same person.

I was volunteering with my company that had a presence in the area. It was largely uneventful as most of the heavy lifting was done so it turned out to be more moral support than anything else. I’m glad there wasn’t still a lot to do actually.

The search for people unaccounted for after the deadliest U.S. wildfire in at least a century is winding down in Northern California, with just 11 names left on a fluctuating list that once approached 1,300 and prompted fears that hundreds had died in the flames.

The declining number released late Monday came as a relief in the Paradise area as it reels from the wildfire that killed at least 85 people and destroyed nearly 14,000 homes.

Families, friends and even long-ago acquaintances have been peppering social media with pleas for help finding people. Sometimes they had no more than a first name to work with.

Authorities now say they have located more than 3,100 people who had been reported as unreachable at some point during the catastrophe.

“I think that’s a pretty remarkable number at this point,” Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea said.

He also has revised the death toll down to 85 from 88, saying medical examiners determined several bags of human remains were duplicates.

My cousin must have some sort of miraculous insurance. Her house and out buildings on her property are all destroyed. Not only was her insurance putting her up in hotels and giving her spending money for the month that she was unable to visit her home, but now that she has been there and has found it destroyed, they have completely paid off her claim on the house (she still holds the ownership of the property), and she has already used that money to buy a new house.
