> Yeah, but Ted Nolan is coaching Latvia!!! I am so conflicted on this one - I work for a national First Nations organization and everyone in the office is tuned into the game. And everyone is as conflicted as I am - Ted’s from Garden River and at least 4 of my co-workers are from there.

That’s right! I forgot that Nolan was coaching them. And boy, did he do a heck of a job.

It sounds like the Latvian goalie, Kristers Gudlevskis, had the game of his life. It’ll be interesting to see how he does in the NHL.

> Consider a couple who have hated each other’s guts and been at war with each other for eighteen years while living in the same house together, albeit living entirely independently. Although physically living together, they are separated for family law purposes because they were absolutely certain that their marriage was over. (Ironically, these folks didn’t do a lick of work on their house in all that time, each demanding that the other keep it in repair, so it fell apart around them, despite them both being fully employed as maintenance/janitors.)

This sounds like it came from a real-life matter. I’m kind of curious to find out how it all turned out.

Canada completely dominated Latvia. They were much more dominant over Latvia than the USA was over the Czechs. The difference between the two games’ margins was that the Czech’s goalie played atrociously and Latvia’s goalie played brilliantly.

Hockey is a game, like baseball, where one position is so important that a player excelling at it can win a game even when his teammates are vastly inferior in every other respect to their opponents. The history of hockey is littered with examples of goalies essentially stealing games. All the concern over Canada is quite misplaced; they’ve just run into a few hot goalies. They remain the best team in the world and it’s not even a close call.

That said, the USA is IMHO clearly the SECOND best team in the world and it might be the best team they’ve ever had, so the semifinal could be a magnificent game.

My only concern is that Team Canada continues to play Dan Hamhuis over PK Subban, I would assume because Subban just isn’t white enough.

Yeah, you’ve said things like this before about Subban. I’m not buying it: not in 2014 Canada. Fuck that.

I’m really worried about the US, and primarily because my guy on the Leafs has been playing exceptionally well. Kessel could be the guy who brings down Canada, somewhat ironically.

I think it has more to do with Canada getting more than enough offense from Keith, Weber and Doughty, and they like Hamhuis’ D better than Subban’s O.

There’s definitely an argument to be made that a higher-risk, higher-reward player like Subban isn’t as valuable to a top team in a short tournament, where one goal can swing an elimination game. Canada has enough game breakers that they don’t really need one more who could potentially swing the game either way.

Of course, Sweden’s doing just fine with Karlsson.

Neither had proof of values at date of marriage or at date of separation eighteen years previously, both had similar incomes over the years, and both were still on for the mortgage and were mortgaged to the hilt in a house that was falling apart. The lawyers figured that their mortgage could be pulled for letting the property degrade, and the appraisal indicated that if it degraded any further its FMV would be less than the outstanding debt, so we persuaded them to sell the place and walk away debt free with only the shirts on their backs but good credit records, rather than continue to fight and face certain bankruptcy which would leave them debt free after a further nine months, with the shirts on their backs and trashed credit records. What it came down to is that they drove each other into the ground and only stopped when they both ran out of money at the same time. What a waste of eighteen years of their lives!

Thanks, **Muffin** , for the rest of the story. Sounds like it was indeed a waste of 18 years.

I’ve practiced in the family area, and I’ve had some successes for my clients. Still, I’ll admit that my dislike for family law has increased as I’ve encountered people who only want to screw their ex, rather than shut the door on the relationship, and move forward.

John Mortimer famously said that he would rather defend guilty murderers than represent clients in divorce proceedings. On the whole, the murderers, having got rid of the person who was really bugging them, seemed to be rather nice people, whereas the divorce clients all seemed to want to do the nastiest things permissible to their former partners.

For the record, I still talk to and get along with my ex. I had Christmas dinner at her place. I’ve dropped by to hang shelves and candle holders, and have done some car maintenance for her. We’re not mortal enemies, but the marriage just wasn’t working for either of us.

Good job, Leaffan. Most folks are like you, doing their best to deal with a difficult situation. Respect, patience and compromise, and dealing with issues rather than asserting position, is the norm, so few people end up going to war. It’s good to hear that you are handling it very well.

Or they win the gold medal. Remember, they’ve run into hot goalies _and won_. That’s how good this team is; the opposing goalie made two games’ worth of saves, absolutely stood on his head, and Canada still won.

But they could lose. That’s sports. Welcome to hockey. In any single-elimination tournament the best team could always lose. The opposing goalie could stand on his head. The opposing pitcher could pick that night to pitch a shutout. You could play better basketball across the board but the other guy’s shooting guard goes absolutely insane and hits 18 out of 20 shots. You could have the best football team in the world and watch in horror as a deflected pass turns into a pick-six to win the game. This is the nature of single-elimination and it’s nuts to think any hockey team ever assembled could GUARANTEE a win. Canada is the best team but that means I’d give them maybe a 35% shot at gold right now.

If all the national teams played an 82-game season there is no chance, none at all, that Canada would not finish first. Zero chance; they’d go 67-15 or something like that. But they could always lose any one given game.

Sweden was in this but their skip made a dreadful error in the ninth end, allowing a steal of two that pretty much ended it.

Jennifer Jones is a cyborg.

I watched most of her games, and she made some stupefying shots.

Actually, all 4 women were cyborg-like at different times, but Jones was absolutely clutch; she just didn’t miss important shots in waning ends.
