I don’t always get up at 6:45 on Sunday morning. But when I do, it’s for gold. For all that people have complained about Canada’s struggle to score goals, they have a crushing, shutdown defence. Canada could staff three Olympic teams with premiere defencemen. the USA had been scoring like crazy but they couldn’t sustain pressure in this one; there were very few quality chances and almost no second chances and it didn’t take a lot of miracle saves from Carey Price. They were just killing every chance in front of him. Do not take Sweden lightly. Oh no; that is a fine team indeed, and Erik Karlsson has gone completely insane during the tournament. He’s at the height of his powers. ---

So, so much for working from home. I got an invitation to go to a friend’s place to watch the game on his gazillion inch HDTV. Wow. I’ll be honest, I didn’t think we’d win this. Canada played an amazing game. They completely dominated. Jamie Benn? I’d barely heard of the guy till today and he played a phenomenal game. So, I have an invitation to a gold cup party now at 7:00 AM Sunday. You bet I’m bringing a jug of Caesar! GO CANADA GO! ---

They played this game pretty much the same way they’ve played them all; they get a little better every time just by virtue of playing together, but so do most teams in these things. The only thing that’s gone wrong for them, at all, is that the puck just isn’t going in the net. They’re getting chances but not getting it past goalies, and that is generally just a matter of luck, which can be very streaky in that regard. But in terms of puck and game control they’re crushing their opponents, especially defensively. Make no mistake; Canada has the best team in the world, always has, and will for at least 20 years more (at which point, at the rate things are going, the USA might catch up.) We simply have too many players and too big a talent development system. But in single elimination tournaments even the big favourite is no guaranteed winner. ---

She had no plans to watch the early-Sunday-morning hockey game. I told her of your “turn in your passport” threat. As it turns out, she is American. Born in the state of Washington, and cares nothing for hockey. I’ll try to watch the game, but it’s on here at 0500 on a Sunday morning. Maybe I should stock up on tomato juice and vodka. A couple of Bloody Marys might make things easier. (I cannot drink Caesars; the clamato just does not agree with me.)
