Put that in your pipe and smoke it, you left wing kooks!
The CanaDoper Café (2012 edition of The great, ongoing Canadian current events and politics thread.)
I thought Gordon Lightfoot did an excellent job of taking the energy right down in the Stadium.
I truly think that Justin Trudeau will indeed win the Liberal leadership some day, and he will probably become Prime Minister of Canada some day. I don’t want that to happen (because as noted, his bona fides are all in his name), but I think it will happen.
Bringing J.Bieber on for half time was marketing genius. No wait, what’s that other phrase?
Idiotic and Asinine. Ya ,that’s it.
Great choice of song there too. “I wanna be your boyfriend”. Thousands of football fans most of them grown men are not going to throw their “my little pony” panties at the stage, mkay?
I guess professional football in Canada figures that it’s missing out on the tween girl demographic. Not enough 10 year old girls watching the game. I hear next year all the uniforms for the teams are going to be based on Pokemon characters. The Argonauts are going to be renamed to “The Toronto Pikachu’s”.
My son literally BEGGED us to turn the TV off. He predicts that half the boys in his school will have done the same.
And in other news, Rob Ford has been booted from office as Mayor of Toronto.
Congrats I guess, they’ve been trying to get rid of him by any means necessary for a long time. That’ll learn those right wing loonies to use *office stationary.
*yeah I know there’s a little more to it, but not much more.
Agreed.
Maybe now Ford can get down to what is most important to him - coaching his beloved football team.
Doesn’t Clayton Ruby have a pretty decent win-loss record?
As for the Grey Cup halftime show, I missed Gordon Lightfoot, came back just in time to be bored to death by (I found their name out later) Mariana’s Trench, heard Call Me Maybe, and both Bieber songs for the first time ever.
I’ve seen Call Me Maybe referenced online countless times, but had no idea who the artist was, or that she was Canadian, so I felt a tiny pang of entertainment industry pride at that.
I didn’t notice any booing going on, at all. What I did notice, was that it almost seemed as though crowd noise was manufactured into the telecast, as I really find it incredible that Bieber, popular as he is, or any of the acts, really, would garner such a cacophonous reaction from the game attendees.
Don’t forget bragging about how he doesn’t use much of his expense account. Ah…the simple joys of life.
Mark Carney just left to become the governor of the Bank of England..
I feel vaguely disquieted about this.
Vaguely disquieted?
I have an undefined ambivalence.
Not a nebulous indifference? I’m holding out for one of those.
Rob Ford has been removed as mayor of Toronto due to conflict of interest violations.
Im trying to parse that to see which one seems more important to you…
Actually, I think we lost a very intelligent and capable guy here. My nebulousness is fading.
ETA: Yes, I’m still talking about Carney.
I’m generally mystified at this point, but I think I can get on board with vaguely disquieted if I do more research.
I thought the music for the Grey Cup was pretty much mis-cast from beginning to end. There are tons of excellent Canadian artists who would have been more appropriate for the show, but they chose who they went with for reasons that I either don’t understand or don’t agree with.
Agreed.

He spoke to and voted on a motion on which he had a direct pecuniary interest, which is prohibited under the Municipal Conflict of Interest Act.
The sanction for that, set out in the Act, is removal from office.
I understood the choice of Lightfoot, to tie into the Grey Cup train, 100th Grey Cup, Canada’s history, etc. But, sadly, I’m afraid Gord is past it - his singing voice was feeble compared to his glory days.
The rest of it? meh.
