Yeah, I’d rather put up with a hobbled Marois for a few years than constantly go back to the polls. It’s a waste of money and such a negative and hate-filled exercise that takes away from actual things all parties should be seeking to do to improve this province. It comes down to whether or not the MNAs behave… and these are politicians, after all. I expect them to make stupid decisions on a regular basis!
Can I bitch about something here, though? A friend on Facebook - and strangers on random websites - like to “insult” Jean Charest by calling him “John James.” It’s his legal name, sure, but I have it on good authority - childhood friends - that he’s been known as “Jean” his whole damn life. The 'insult" is rather clearly based on the idea that an anglophone name somehow makes him less Québecois, less worthy of respect (whatever his actions may be to that respect). This is the kind of anti-anglo, bigoted, xenophobic crap that infiltrates political discussion here, and I’m tired of seeing it. It’s imature and disrespectful and insults more than just M. Charest. Is my name too anglophone for some people? My friend has about 6 Facebook posts with this insult…I’d rather rant here than start a Facebook fight.
Wow… fire set to the Metropolis while the PQ supporters were inside and apparently a gun shot of some sort. Welcome to the big show, Marois.
I’m more worried about the Metropolis than I am her and others in the building, at the moment- we know they are unharmed, but DO NOT DESTROY THE METROPOLIS! Bastard.
… apparently 2 people have been hurt. Damn.
There was a union Nationale premier of Quebec named Antonio. I’ve no idea what his politics were, or why a francophone would be named Antonio, but I like him!
I know what you’re talking about, I was hanging out with some french friends after work once. Politics came up and basically said in french Je suis Quebecois.
And most of them found this hilarious, like no you’re not. Never made that mistake again.
Yeah they did a 50 year old guy, two people in critical condition from gunshots. He tossed a molotov cocktail and apparently this part is unconfirmed yet yelled in french “the english will awaken” or something like that.
Wow, glued to the set. My husband is Franco Ontarian and despite living in Montreal for 5 years ( I lived there for 3 when I went to Concordia late 80s early 90s) he has no use for Quebec politics. (As a franco ontarian, and very left of centre federally he was more happy about the breakthrough of NDP in Quebec last year than he is about any provincial politics… he feels separatism is bad for the francophonie else where)
We were flicking through the channels and …just wow…
Never seen him care so much about Quebec politics.
Sad, sad day. I’d like to say that most people realize that this one unhinged idiot does NOT represent all anglos, but I’m seeing hateful things and claims that this is “proof” that anglos hate francos and whatnot. So stupidly divisive (not from anyone official, but facebook and news comments).
My condolences to the victims and their families. Even to the PQ and Marois…I dislike her but this is ridiculous. No one deserves this.
I’m so exhausted and sleep deprived. Even with this tragedy, one of my idiot neighbours kept drunkenly chanting “on a gagné!” well into the night. Girl, we’ve all lost more than any party could have won last night. As usual, it’s 2am…shut up and stop yelling and let your neighbours sleep.
No we’re not. The Liberals had to be kicked out given the corruption allegations, educational mayhem, construction/infrastructure failures and just the general exhaustion of 10 years of single party rule. The PQ is holding a minority government with 1/3 of the vote, most Quebeckers seem to agree that a solid majority of 60% or more would be needed to “win” a referendum and less than 30% are supporters of the idea.
This is unfortunate but it’s no anglo-FLQ movement.
Complete aside, I would’ve paid good money to have had Marios’ victory speech held at the Thunderdome instead of Metropolis. Assuming it’s even still around of course.
“I don’t know how many times people have to explain this: in addition to being illegal, shooting at people is never useful as political activism, except for the people at whom you’re trying to shoot.”
