The CanaDoper Café (2012 edition of The great, ongoing Canadian current events and politics thread.)

Not proud, but it does feel good to get national attention given we have such a vast country.

Glad you are okay.

Glad you’re okay, Spoons!

It’s one of the things I like about Canadians - we hear about evacuations in Lethbridge, or severe flooding in Manitoba, or a shooting in Montréal, or a really bad road accident in New Brunswick and our reaction tends to be “Oh, I know/I’m related to someone who lives there; I hope they’re alright!”.

So Leaffan , We’ve been waiting with breathless anticipation! How was the Great Manitoba Smokie Experience? I don’t remember seeing the verdict.

I’m glad you and the cats are OK, Spoons.

Events like this make me re-evaluate what some of my more “survivalist” friends have done; making a "bug-out"bag in case they have to leave in a hurry. I used to think it was a little over the top as the Zombie Apocalypse isn’t until next year, but I’m re-evaluating that now. (Sarcasm,… Or is it?)

A simple thing like a wind storm, a fire, or a flood in Nfld’s case and what do you do? How long would it take to get your pics, ID, spare cash, meds and pet stuff together?
Maybe a few hours putting one together might be a good idea. We have a 72 hr kit in the house now, so this wouldn’t be too much work.

According to my family there is a line between ‘prudent preparation’ and ‘nutty’ that I’m in constant danger of slipping over

I keep the clothes, first aid, and protein bars in a bag in the closet; ID and emergency cash in a lockbox; important papers in one file folder. I’d probably spend more time finding my shoes than throwing everything together.

Newfoundland home to Canada’s next big oil find. Ha HA! See how you guys like everyone hating you because you’re not flat broke any longer!

Sorry, was that bitter?

I’m trying to understand the angle on this:

It is, obviously, an utterly imbecilic idea, the aeronautical equivalent of suggesting that the army should get some Sherman tanks or go back to using Lee-Enfield rifles. The Arrow might have been a great plane for its time had it actually been completely designed and had that completed design actually worked, but today it would be absurdly out of place unless you pretty much redesigned it entirely, at which point why would you even pretend it was the same plane?

What I find weird is that nobody, least of all the RCAF, would take this seriously. So what’s the PR ploy? Is this a fundraising thing? Why is Lewis Mackenzie speaking on behalf of it and saying things that are bald-faced lies?

Nope. Friggin’ rich newfies driving thier big trucks all over the island. Next thing you know they’ll be renaming Conception Bay South “Little Alberta”…

Nationalistic pride?

I’m guessing yes, it’s trying to leverage the legend of the Arrow for fundraising purposes. I’m sure that, if by some stroke of insanity, they got a contract they either wouldn’t be able to deliver or the price would skyrocket. And the owners/mangement at Bourdeau Industries would personally take home plenty of cash before the project crashed and burned.

As for Gen. Mackenzie a quick look at his bio doesn’t really show an engineering background so he may actually believe some of what he’s saying. On the other hand, complete idiots don’t (I hope) get as high in the military as he did. Is senility possible? He was born in 1940.

Mackenzie seems to be seriously off his rocker.

Not to mention absolutely wrong. The Arrow was an interceptor from the get go and would be utterly the wrong airframe for ground support. Now I’ll admit that the F-15, which had/has the same mandate, has made a decent ground support truck in the form of the Strike Eagle but that airframe is completely rebuilt compared to an F-15C, which it was derived from.
Realistically, Super Hornets or Silent Eagles make the most sense for Canada. In the case of F-18s, we already have the infrastructure in place and the training/logistics bill would be minimal compared to what’s required for JSF.

Anyone else here concerned about the whole Gov’t vs AG bunfight in progress?

We just had a drop in the price of gas down to $1.259 per litre. Its been a whole week now. That is here in Campbell River, B.C.

I had just heard that Quebeckers are paying over $1.50.

What’s the price of gas in your immediate area ?

It just jumped from 1.15 to 1.23 here, though they say it may go down again shortly.

Of course right when I was holding up filling my tank until payday.

Pretty much the same here: $1.15 went to $1.22.

It’s all the Tories’ fault for selling Petro-Canada to the capitalist running-dog lackies of imperialist Wall Street.

Wow. Really?

Not to mention that the aircraft would still need to be redesigned from the ground up even as an interceptor, as the original engineering design was to 1950s standards and was never intended for production (one of the reasons for the Arrow cancellation was the huge amount of expensive individual component redesign that would have been required to move from prototype to production).

Yep. You read it here first.

Well, second. Maybe third.

Not quite true. The Arrow prototype was the production model. It was one of the very first aircraft to do this. You are right though, the entire aircraft would have to be re-thought, and although it was a sound design, I suspect we won’t be building our own fighters anytime soon.

gas was 114.9 here the other day.
