It’s not hard to see why the guy got absolutely stomped, is it?

There is something at least vaguely irritating and often laugh-out-loud disconnected from reality in almost every paragraph.

Have you tried the following? Most US gas pumps will accept the following; 3 digits from your postal code followed by two zeros. Examples include, H0H0H0 would be 000000 and B1G 5L8 would be 15800. Works most times.

Exactly! A noticed a couple of paragraphs that prove how disconnected he is.

The day after, that future had vanished. I was unemployed and five and half months short of eligibility for the pension that usually goes with six years of service as an MP.

Waaahh!
As a taxpayer this sickens me, planes, drivers, chefs, housekeepers, a staff of 100!? I don’t want to hear how the over-privileged are living a life of luxury on my dime.
…and only 6 years as an MP to qualify for a pension!? I have to work 35 years for my pension.

Rob Prichard, a friend of 30 years, came to the rescue, and after he’d made a few calls to John Fraser, master of Massey College, David Naylor, the president of the University of Toronto, and Janice Gross Stein, director of the Munk School of Global Affairs, I was back in my old life, teaching human rights and politics once again.

Is this guy so bad with money that he needed to find a job immediately? Must be nice to have some friend make a few calls for you and give you a job without so much as applying or going through the interview process. How does the rest of the faculty feel about that?

In sports you play by the rules. In politics you just play and the winner rewrites the rules afterwards . . .

He references Machiavelli, Cicero, Burke, et al. then drops this huge turd!?
Did he fail to comprehend his own subject matter? No wonder, he was lost.

To be fair, it was during an election so he would have had access to a plane funded by the Liberal party and the staff would be the Liberal election team.

That’s pretty frightening - it looks like he’s getting away with it for now because we don’t really have laws that anticipate this kind of insanity. Caverhill is getting passed from one government department to the next with each one saying, “Well, this isn’t really our jurisdiction, so we can’t help you.” I know getting a bad tenant out of a property can be very difficult for a homeowner, but this Freeman jerk is turning that into an art form.

The real issue, as I see it as a budding legal mind (or someone who will one day play one on TV), is that even if she sues this seditious clown for the $17,000 lien, back rent, and the cost of repainting the apartment, etc., these freaks don’t sound like they have the income prospects to ever pay her back. Or at least I don’t think so.

Welcome to being a landlord. Evictions and actions on damages take time. The tenant’s beliefs are of no bearing on the matter, for a bat-shit-crazy deadbeat is a bat-shit-crazy deadbeat even when dressed up as a Freeman-on-the-Landlord’s-Land.

I’d like the courts to apply security for costs when Freemen raise their nutty defences.

Hell, seeing as the Freemen are so contemptuous of the law and the judicial system, might as well lock them up for contempt every time they start injecting their beliefs in a proceeding.

By far the most animated of the candidates (10!). He was actually very aware of what a joke he was. His latest thing is about how we are all going to die from the nuclear radiation from Fukushima. And how if we had only voted for him in the '80s then we would have no interest and therefore no global financial meltdown. Like I said, wildly entertaining. He said nothing to win my vote, but he did get the most laughs of the evening.

I think he’s been somewhere on the ballot for almost every election in the 40-odd years I’ve been voting in Ottawa.

Well, the news report indicated that he does own a GMC Yukon, so at least he might have some assets that could be seized in satisfaction of a judgment. Of course, he might have them protected behind a corporate veil, but this guy doesn’t seem to be the kind who would work with the law to protect assets in that way.

I’ve done the legal work behind evictions in Alberta before, and it’s not a difficult process–at least on the paperwork end. Make an application to Provincial Court Civil (i.e. Small Claims Court) for an eviction. File your notice, serve it, and on the appointed day, argue your matter before a judge. If you get a judgment, file and serve it on the tenant; if the tenant doesn’t budge, get a writ of possession (and a couple of police officers) and physically throw him out. Note that, in this particular matter, under Alberta law, the landlord could apply for a 24-hour eviction, owing to the damage to the property.

That being said, however, this guy sounds like the kind who would bury the landlord and the courts in “paper terrorism”: endless liens, absurd fee schedules, nonsensical Notices of Understanding and Claims of Right, and all the other FOTL paperwork. The $17,000 lien is already worrisome, though I’m thinking that it would be no trouble for a lawyer to dispose of through an application for an order telling Land Titles to remove it. Regardless, if things get to this point, the landlord is on the hook for legal fees, which she may not be able to afford; and we’re back to Tenant being unable to pay a judgment in any event. **Muffin** , I’d suggest that in this matter, we’re not only looking at security for costs; but we’re also looking at a bond or similar over the amount in issue.

Unfortunately, at this point, I can only think that the landlord needs a good lawyer who is armed with a copy of _Meads v. Meads_.

Yes, I read _Duncan_ when it came out. Far more entertaining than _Meads_; but I’d suggest that _Meads_ was the serious take that allowed judges to have a little fun with Freemen, as in _Duncan_.
