[Lyn Nofziger,](http://www.latimes.com/news/printedition/california/la-me-nofziger28mar28,1,6866721.story?coll=la-headlines-pe-california) who served as Ronald Reagan’s communications director when Reagan was governor of California, has died at the age of 81. When Reagan was elected President of the United States, Nofziger followed him to Washington, and worked as Reagan’s assistant for political affairs before taking over as press spokesman after Press Secretary James Brady was wounded in John Hinckley’s attempt to assassinate Reagan. ---

I too, have ended my Celebrity Death Pool dry spell with Mr. Weinberger’s passing. Now, if only Bucky Covington gets eliminated tomorrow and the Dick Van Dyke Show wins the Sitcom March Madness, I’ll have a hat trick! ---

[Howard “Red” Hickey,](http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/chronicle/archive/2006/03/31/SPGOCI1AUH1.DTL) who was head coach of the San Francisco 49ers from 1959 to 1963, has died at the age of 89. As an assistant with the NFL team, he concocted the “alley-oop” pass. While at the helm, Hickey brought the shotgun formation into prominence. He later served as lead scout for the Dallas Cowboys, whose prominence in the 1970’s was significantly attributable to Hickey’s discovery of players and his teaching of shotgun principles to quarterback Roger Staubach. ---

[Gloria Monty,](http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercurynews/news/breaking_news/14251503.htm) who helped turn _General Hospital_ from a slumping soap opera to a _Newsweek_ cover subject after taking over as producer of the daytime drama in 1978, has died at the age of 84. Monty engineered the _GH_ romance of Luke (Tony Geary) and Laura (Genie Francis), which started with a rape in a disco and culminated in a 1981 wedding which drew 30,000,000 viewers. Incidentally, AOL is currently running the quiz (described [on this page)](http://www.deadoraliveinfo.com/dead.nsf/pages-nf/main) that continues to insist Telly Savalas is still alive. ---
