This [Wikipedia](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scott_Carpenter) article on Carpenter is quite prejudice in his favor; Chris Kraft fried his ass in the book _Flight._ Carpenter was a doofus who almost used all his fuel on the Mercury flight with potential fatal results. He ended up working with undersea habitats rather than continuing in the space program. [Pete Conrad](http://www.nasa.gov/centers/johnson/news/releases/1999_2001/j99-24.html) on the other hand, the ultimate cool, died in a motorcycle accident at 69, a short guy, his first words upon stepping onto the Moon were, “that may have been a small one for Neil, but that’s a long one for me.” 🙂 ---
