Ok, a tough call for the judges: [Steve Fossett declared dead.](http://www.nytimes.com/2008/02/16/us/16fossett.html?ex=1360818000&en=8b003eca01e6edb2&ei=5089&partner=rssyahoo&emc=rss) So, is he dead as of today, or back in last September when he disappeared, or some time in between? The article I link to says a judge has declared him dead, but there is no mention of whether the judge ruled on a date of death. ---

While we dodged the bullet this time,\* I think it would be wise to adopt a Steve Fossett Rule whereby someone widely presumed to have died but not declared dead cannot be listed in subsequent years. Alas, that doesn’t address the situation we (potentially) were in in 2007. Someone needs to decide whether or not a celeb has to be _declared_ dead in order to be sufficiently dead for our purposes. * * * - Not only do my picks dodge bullets, they seem to have a knack for avoiding _anything_ that could be harmful to their health. . . . ---
