[Patriarch Alexy II](http://www.sacbee.com/830/story/1450887.html), who had headed the Russian Orthodox Church since 1990, has died at the age of 79. After the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, Alexy helped not only to restore the church buildings which had been neglected or converted to other uses during the Communist years, but to restore the faith’s prominence in Russian life as well.
