[Myles Brand](http://news.rpi.edu/update.do), who had been the president of the National Collegiate Athletic Association since 2003, has died at the age of 67. While serving as president of Indiana University, Brand became known for firing Bob Knight, the Bloomington school’s successful but controversial head basketball coach. [Melvin Simon](http://www.indystar.com/article/20090916/BUSINESS/90916012/), whose Simon Property Group developed such shopping centers as the Mall of America in Minnesota, has passed away at 82. With brother Herb (also a key in the Simon Property Group), Melvin Simon bought the National Basketball Association’s Indiana Pacers franchise in 1983. ---

[Irving Kristol](http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/us_and_americas/article6841358.ece), considered the “godfather of neoconservatism” after starting the magazine _The Public Interest_ in 1965, has died at the age of 89. A former Trotskyist, Kristol turned rightward as he aged, and the influence of his movement’s think tanks helped place Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush in the White House. ---

[Monte Clark](http://www.latimes.com/news/obituaries/la-me-monte-clark18-2009sep18,0,2430679.story), who coached the National Football League’s Detroit Lions from 1978 to '84, has died at the age of 72. An offensive lineman during his NFL playing career, Clark coached the offensive line of the undefeated 1972 Miami Dolphins before landing his first pro head coaching job with the San Francisco 49ers (the team which had drafted him in 1959) for the 1976 campaign. [Arthur Ferrante](http://www.latimes.com/news/obituaries/la-me-arthur-ferrante21-2009sep21,0,5788034.story), who teamed with Lou Teicher for forty years as a piano duo, has passed away at 88. The classically trained Ferrante and Teicher gained their greatest fame for their renditions of such film music as the themes from _The Apartment_, _Exodus_, and _Midnight Cowboy_. ---

[John Hart](http://www.latimes.com/news/obituaries/la-me-john-hart23-2009sep23,0,2845778.story), who replaced Clayton Moore as the title character for 52 episodes of the _Lone Ranger_ TV series, has died at the age of 91. Hart had earlier played the lead in the movie serial version of radio’s _Jack Armstrong: The All-American Boy_ ---

This just in, Susan Atkins, 61, of brain cancer. You did horrible things, Susan, and apparently you tried to repent the best you could. Now rest in the Light of Christ. ---
