Death happens in threes, but I cannot think of three people more dissimilar than Andy Rooney, Joe Frazier, and Heavy D, who died within three days of each other: Rooney was known as a writer and TV speaker, a member of the WWII generation, lived to be very old. Joe Frazier, boxer, a member of the Woodstock generation, died middle aged. Heavy D, rapper, a member of the 1990’s culter, died young. ---

One thing they had in common. All three died unexpectedly of natural causes. Usually you either have a long deathwatch, like Zsa Zsa Gabor or Steve Jobs, or a surprise death not due to natural causes, like Amy Winehouse or Cory Smoot. And maybe it’s just my age talking, but is 67 really considered middle-aged? ---

Oklahoma State women’s basketball coach Kurt Budke and assistant Miranda Serna [have died in a plane crash along with two others](http://espn.go.com/womens-college-basketball/story/_/id/7250025/oklahoma-state-cowboys-coach-kurt-budke-assistant-miranda-serna-illed-plane-crash), just 10 months after the school commemorated the 10th anniversary of a crash that killed 10 men associated with the men’s program. Budke was 50. No age was give for Serna. ---
