Clint Howard’s the one with the greatest debt to Andy. If Andy hadn’t helped to make Ron successful, he would have never have been able to implement family welfare and hire the marginally human Clint. ---

[Ben Davidson](http://www.latimes.com/news/obituaries/la-me-ben-davidson-20120704,0,7541335.story), whose pro football career was primarily spent with the Oakland Raiders, has died at the age of 72. Besides starring at defensive end, Davidson was also known for his roles in Miller Lite commercials and in such films as _MASH_. [R.C. Owens](http://www.latimes.com/news/obituaries/la-me-rc-owens-20120624,0,1695894.story), whose heroics as a San Francisco 49ers receiver helped introduce the term “alley oop” to the sports lexicon, passed away at 77. Owens, who had led the country in rebounding while playing basketball for the College of Idaho, not only used his leaping ability in catching the football, but once blocked a field-goal attempt on the gridiron by swatting the ball away just as it was about to clear the crossbar (a stratagem since banned by the NFL). ---

One obituary that slipped through the cracks last month: [Richard Lynch](http://www.nytimes.com/2012/06/21/movies/richard-lynch-who-played-bad-guys-dies-at-76.html?_r=1&src=recg), who employed his platinum hair and scarred face to play villainous characters in films like “Bad Dreams” and “The Sword and the Sorcerer,” was found dead on Tuesday at his home in Palm Springs, Calif. He was 76. And this one from yesterday: [Eric Sykes](http://www.nytimes.com/2012/07/06/arts/eric-sykes-british-comic-actor-is-dead-at-89.html?src=recg), one of the most popular British comic actors of his generation, died on Wednesday. He was 89. His movies in the 1960s and 1970s included “Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines” (1965), “The Spy With a Cold Nose” (1966) and “Theater of Blood” (1973). He later played a servant in “The Others” (2001), starring Nicole Kidman, and had a small part as a gardener in “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire” (2005). ---
