I wonder if Chavez isn’t playing a game like something I saw in a movie once. It was an old Russian movie, by Sergei Eisenstein, about Ivan the Terrible. At one point he was very ill, but had started to recover. He and just a couple of others wanted to know how people would react to his “death”, as in, would they support his young son or would they make a power grab for themselves. As the boyars were gathering one guy caught a glimpse of Ivan accidentally and realized he wasn’t near death after all. So he hurriedly grabbed a big cross they were all supposed to swear(or not) their loyalty on, kissed it, and loudly proclaimed his loyalty to the tsar and his son. He thereby gained mucho brownie points with Ivan, which was the whole point I suppose. ---
