861 is the 41st triangular number. 41 + 40 + 39 + … + 3 + 2 +1 = 861 Two quick ways to compute a selected triangular number: 1. Multiply the largest number _n_ of the series (in this case, 41) by the midpoint between _n_and 1. 41 x 21 = 861 1. Add _n_ to 1, then multiply that result by half of _n_. 41 + 1 = 42 41/2 = 20.5 42 x 20.5 = 861 ---
