Thank you, Miller. And even if she isn’t a Fundamentalist, she could be a lower-case fundamentalist Coptic, in that her attitude towards her religion is extreme.
But as I was quoting you, I was referring to the fundies out there making a fuss on her behalf, not this woman herself.
I thought she likely was Coptic being half Egyptian, but heard no confirmation.
I’ve just heard a spittle-flecked rant by Anne Widdecombe on 5Live tonight. She’s boycotting BA, “political correctness gone mad!”, typical Daily Mail shit. Most of the other callers have been just as bad, reading from their Peter Hitchens/Melanie Philips hymn sheet. I’m sure that the producers select for controversy but fucks sake it’s depressing.
Most religious people I know are kind, do good works, love their neighbours, and do as they would be done by. Which I thought was the whole fucking point. This other fucking rabble of extremist throwbacks are a cancer on our society.
I thought I could put that out there for the hell of it, but no one’s biting.
This is what I learned from you guys:
That this woman was trying to convert.
That this woman was a fundy.
That it is perfectly acceptable to deny a woman to wear a small Christian symbol but it is not acceptable to deny a Muslim woman to wear religious head gear.
That the Anglican heirarchy is fundamentalist
That wearing a cross means you’re trying to convert people.
That Britain has no constitution, (despite their constitutional experts) or that America’s constitution is better.
I’m not buying any of this bullshit. What this proves to me is that the lot of you responding in this thread are hateful towards Christians who want to openly wear a cross. Tell me all about equal rights and liberal compassion and your accusations of fundy/conservative/ christian hate , but it rings of hypocricy to me when this little old lady is smeared for wanting to wear a little token of her spirituality that WONT HURT ANYONE !
Which, flyingdutchman (since I assume you’ll need help interpreting the meaning), is the witty way of saying: “You’re coming off like a goddamn fucking idiot.”
Maybe he knows that American dude who, back in early 2000, said to the Magistrate on Diego Garcia, “I refuse to answer. I’m claiming my rights under the Fifth Amendment.” Ah, I love watching Americans in courts overseas. It’s much cheaper than paying for comedy channels on satellite TV.
It doesn’t matter that some Muslims cover their head and some don’t. Some Orthodox Jewish women cover their hair, but most Jewish women don’t. Some sects of Christianity are required to cover their hair, but most Christian women don’t belong to these particular sects. The fact that most don’t cover their head doesn’t negate the fact that some women believe that their religion requires their head to be covered.
As I said earler, a cross is an expression of religion…it is not a specific type of dress required for modesty reasons. If this Christian woman was required to cover her head by her religion (or wear some other kind of clothing for modesty reasons), but was not allowed to, then she would have a case for unfairness. Otherwise, I just don’t see it.
stating that you must openly wear a religious symbol at work (despite a non-discrimatory ban) because it matters to you is not trying to convert people (it is)
Britain has a Constitution like the US (it doesn’t)
the right to say anything you like in the UK exists outside Parliament (it doesn’t)
wearing a little token of your spirituality doesn’t hurt (unless it’s Satanic!)
Wow, you’ve been on the board for six years and don’t think people can be that thick? I’ve gotten pretty jaded in just a year. It’s nice to see you still tend a little flame of hope though.
No, now this poor excuse for a used asswipe is not as thick as he appears, he’s a fucking TROLL. I’m through; he doesn’t deserve the oxygen he’s wasting right now.
