When I see “In which Somebody does Somethingorother” I think of old book chapter titles. A.A. Milne did this. “Chapter 69 - in which Pooh Gets His Big Fat Self Stuck In Rabbit’s Hole, If You Know What I Mean.” I’ve never seen “Almost Famous” and got really confused by “Penny Lane,” even after the explanation. Maybe I’m slow. The. Comic. Book. Guy. Punctuation annoys me, too. Mainly because it reads so wrong. I speak with The. Comic Book Guy. Punctuation. out loud sometimes, but I do it the way I just wrote. If I wanted to say that something was the best “your mom” joke ever, and I was going to write it like the people who use this punctuation on the boards, it would be: “That was the. Best. Your. Mom. Joke. Ever.” But if I said it out loud, or punctuated it myself using my brain, it would be: “That was the best. “Your Mom” joke. EVER.” With dramatic pauses at the periods, you know? Putting a “stop” punctuation where there is no “stop” pronunciation annoys me. Much like my ramblings about punctuation annoy everybody else! Yippy skippy! ---

Yep, I have started “In which . . .” threads, and I patterned them after chapter titles in 18th-century novels. You know—Richardson? Fielding? Never saw _Almost Famous_, and the only Penny Lane I know is the Beatles song. ---

tomndebb, Would that I were still a youth, or that I had literacy to loose. I was citing the source of current popular use, not the origination, which I agree can be traced to chapter titles. I do not believe you would see the proliferation without the movie quote, would you not agree? I don’t know if weeping for me is cliché, but it sure is disturbing. ---

There are a few of us curmudgeons who truly do eschew smileys and other signs of humor, but who, because of our generally humorless natures, have found that mild forays into such _terra incognita_ have the unsettling result of causing the recipients of our humor (such as it is) to take insult at what they perceive to be stodgy criticism. While I agree that _::: d & r :::_ (and those abominable smileys) are, indeed, blemishes of the worst sort on a message board, I will continue to employ them on those occasions when I believe the target of my comments may take undue umbrage or when I fear to inflict unintended pain. (Pain should never be inflicted _unintended_.) _(And you can’t stop me! So there! nyah, nyah, nyah!)_ ---
