“Verilux” Is that a vacuum cleaner? Something Latin about truth and light? And “DFTT”? Wha? Huh? Duh?

Though I’m tired of “Og Smash” as well (even though I was the person who started poking fun at the poster who kept typing “son og God,” which started the whole thing), I’ve been know to use “For Og’s sake” or something similar as I’m an atheist who doesn’t like to say “For God’s sake,” so I kinda like that phrase, and I’ll probably continue it. Too bad. Somebody can pit me next time. 😛

And like **ColdyClogs** , I like “Gotchya Ya,” cuz it always makes me think of **Eve** ’s priceless contribution to the thread where the phrase originated, and “Fucko Off” cuz it just sounds good. I don’t think I’ve ever used either one, though.

Seriously, most of these do die after a while, but some are pretty tenacious. I think part if it, though, it not just to cut down on the use, but to cut down on the explanations when things are used. How many freaking times do we have to explain “Hi Opal” before someone says “Ya know, it’s kind of passe - why don’t we just let it die?”

I haven’t seen a reference to perfuming of girly bits and poufing of hair in while.

Oh.

Sorry.

Heh.

[sub]I have to say, that was way the hell before my time, and I figured it out without asking anyone. Same with goat-fleching and squicking.[/sub]

If you don’t think Tool has any talent, there’s no way any of their fans will ever convince you that they do. If you don’t like Ben & Jerry’s ice cream, eat something else. Don’t ask the people who love it to explain why. If Monty Python baffles or bores you, just change the channel- please don’t ask fans to explain what makes it funny. \*\*

Those threads can be helpful, though. I started one like that about **2001** (though with a different title) and came out with a better understanding and appreciation of that movie.

Moving on…
The “Ask the [insert thing here]” threads are very annoying if they have no purpose. The ones that do have a purpose are usually really useful and interesting.
I have a really high tolerance for repetitious stuff (Og smash! is still funny to me), but I am sick of the Worst. Thing. Ever. trend, and cow-orker has been getting on my nerves for no good reason.

I agree with **Super Gnat** : Help me understand \_\_\_\_\_ threads can be highly informative and interesting, so long as the OP has a genuine intent to understand other people’s point of view, and isn’t using the thread as an excuse to slag off something he doesn’t personally enjoy. **Mort Furd** ’s Help Me Understand Classical Music Thread was one of the better Cafe Society threads I’ve read. Opinions, postive or negative, don’t just get formed spontaneously. There are always concrete reasons why someone likes or dislikes something, although they may not always be able to articulate them. And if you have an opinion on something that you _can’t_ articulate, such threads are often a huge help in crystallizing exactly why you feel the way you do about the subject.

I think FairyChatMom nailed it with:

“When does an inside joke become cliché? How many times can one use “mmmmm pie” before it’s no longer clever? Maybe when it becomes predictable?”

That’s it. As soon as I open a thread and read the OP and immediately know which dumb jokes will show up, they’ve lost all their value. Everything in this thread qualifies, because they’re all ridiculously overused. If you’ve read something enough times that you actually remember it and think of using it yourself, DON’T.

So, now that we’ve identified all of these SDMB cliches, there is NO excuse for any of you to use them again unless they happen to be the perfect joke for a particular situation. Don’t be an unoriginal bastard, because it’s not nearly as funny or clever as you think, and you people that post these cliches simply look like dumbasses.

Ok, I just took the tone from friendly and jokey to ranty. My apologies. But seriously, this thing should be made sticky and offenders should be shunned by the community.

Can I just second this? Fuckwit is a stock-standard insult in Australia as well - akin to dickhead, dipshit or fuck-knuckle.

#@&%&^(&)&)@@$$##!!!

Okay, “asshat”? Never seen before here, not needed, not particularly clever. We already have ass and asshole, who needs another one? Unless it’s something that a dickhead might wear.

“Fucktard” sounds like clothing also. Something you’d wear while dancing dirtily. Gosh, I hope the last half of that didn’t come from some nonPC source.

“Goat-felching” [with or without hyphen]. I don’t know what it means. Don’t tell me. If I really wanted to know I could find out.

I like the good old all-purpose shift-key top-of-keyboard glissando. Love it love it love it. Sounds like something so BAD you can’t even fucking write it, plus on the painful side. Nobody uses that here. Can’t use it anywhere else because anything with an @ (what is the name of this character anyway?) anywhere else gets turned into a damn link. !@#$%!

Good to see someone else got something out of it besides me. There are some good people on the SDMB who took the time to talk about something they care about - I said it there, and I’ll say it again here: Thanks guys.

And some of them like lame-assed jokes. “Hi, Opal” got old in a hurry - and I’ve been seeing it since my first day on this board.

I’ve been guilty of jumping into a “when come back, bring pie” pile on myself, though, so maybe I ought to just shut up and slink out of here…
