In Rand’s system, based on “the virtue of selfishness” (which is the title of one of her books) nobody ever has any positive ethical duty of any kind to anyone else, apart from the duty to respect another person’s rights. LaVey was saying that is what (his version of) Satanism is all about – the virtue of selfishness. (See [The Eleven Satanic Rules of the Earth](http://churchofsatan.com/eleven-rules-of-earth.php) and [The Nine Satanic Sins](http://churchofsatan.com/nine-satanic-sins.php) to get a feel for what he meant.) With “trappings” in the form of rituals because rituals are fun and focus the mind. But he never said anything to imply he believed such a being as Satan actually exists. “Satan” is just the pet name Satanists give their own egos. ---
