The Curse of Oak Island

I enjoy watching it. They are sure spending lots of someone’s money and drilling some big holes. The divers that drop down the 180 foot deep holes full of water and debris are crazy brave.

The last show was a bit puzzling. They have an archaeologist who dates things and came up with a very early date for that piece of heavy angle with the drilled holes, something older than 1700, I forget exactly.

Hmm. Anything that old is going to be iron not steel, and this looked like a piece of modern plate steel bent sharply into a 90 degree angle. And it had really nice round holes, maybe 3/4". I know blacksmiths can punch holes but these looked too regular. And they came up with at least 2 hexagonal nuts!!! In the 17th century? Hex nuts are pretty much 20th century. These were simply not mentioned by the archaeologist at all.

I’m a hardened skeptic about most things in life. Although I have rose colored glasses when it comes to Oak Island, I think we would all agree that there are two primary conceits:

  1. That the Oak Island Mystery is legitimate

  2. That the TV show about the mystery is legitimate

It pains me to say it, but I am a skeptic about the first one. It’s hard not to be.

I was really wondering about the second one, especially given the History Channel’s recent infatuation with Ancient Aliens and the like. But, the fourth hole has convinced me otherwise. They intended to dig 2 holes. But, they ended up digging 4. That’s because they desperately want to find something - anything - that will support their narrative and provide an additional season (AKA funding). If they were going to stoop to salting the mine, they would’ve surely done it before digging that fourth hole.

If I have to fast forward through them visiting a rock that sort of, but not really, looks like it’s got a face carved on it … and a bunch of Templar crap … just to get to some legitimate investigation, I’m willing to do that. It’s unfortunate. But, the bills have to get paid.

They were on Colbert recently they seemed to be deliberately tanking the interview. Rambling aimlessly about the usual fake history stuff instead of answering his questions.

Yeah, these guys are not representative of actual reality. My BS meter is pinned.

I found that interview here. It looked to me like they were a little overwhelmed by the show and wondered how to best summarize their work for the last 10 years.

It is a complex story - one that requires a fair amount of detail. Very strange that they chose to bring coconut fiber (spoiler!) along with them to the show.
