I’ll be damned! Learn something new every day!
Pay attention class, it’s time for aceplaceonomics. Are we going to be tested on this?
Why do you keep calling his girlfriend his “baby momma?” Johnson never refers to her like that in his testimony and specifically states that he, his gf, and his daughter live together as a family unit. He also never specifically says he gets them McDonald’s for breakfast every morning, but I can see how that portrayal works better for you.
All those years in college paid off.
Just making the point that low income families have to shop at more expensive plays like convenience stores. Many never learned to cook and so they eat expensive and less nutritious fast food meals. It’s a vicious cycle that’s hard to break. Now the places they depended on in Ferguson are gone.
I agree that riots are counterproductive and tend not to produce the broad justice that rioters often (claim to) want.
I would note, however, that the most sophisticated and well-researched histories of Detroit see the riots not as the cause of the city’s downfall, but rather as a symptom of it. The riots did not emerge without context. They were the culmination of decades of racially discriminatory government housing and lending policies, discriminatory real estate dealings such as blockbusting, and prejudice on the part of white city-dwellers who objected to integrated neighborhoods and did everything possible to keep blacks out of their streets before eventually fleeing to the suburbs.
Probably the best work dealing with this stuff for Detroit is Thomas Sugrue’s multi-award-winning book, The Origins of the Urban Crisis: Race and Inequality in Postwar Detroit.
While counterfactual, “What if…” types of history are necessarily speculative, there’s a very good argument to be made that, due to prejudice and discrimination and white flight and deindustrialization, Detroit might still be a post-industrial wasteland today even if the riots never happened.
I think it tells us more about aceplace57 than it does about Johnson.
I’ve used that term myself in the past to define “the other parent of one’s child to whom one has never been married and may or may not be in a long-term relationship with”, and I wouldn’t personally assign any value judgment to it.
ace is like a real life Michael Scott.
Direct quote from page 24. He goes out every morning for breakfast and buys a Cigarillo from a guy in the apartment complex. That morning Brown met up with him and they went to the convenience store for Cigarillos.
geez, you folks will bust a guys balls over anything. I had just read this transcript last night.
Exactly. I was using the accepted term for a a guy’s lady and baby. She’s is not his wife. She’s his baby momma. It’s not in any way what so ever derogatory. It’s actually a very well though out term. A guy might have kids with several women. Maybe none of them are currently his GF. They are his baby momma’s.
It’s the 21 century and we have new terms for families.
“Baby Momma” != Mother of your child with whom you living as a family.
A baby momma (or daddy) is someone you have no relationship other than having a child in common and who you are not in an exclusive relationship with. A more appropriate term would be “girlfriend,” “SO,” “lover,” “partner,” etc.
No. No this is not a phrase for you or “we” to use. In fact, we covered this before and you said:
So no you didn’t read it in The Journal Of Things We Say Now. You heard the phrase and decided you should start using it, and you are once again using it disparagingly (it is generally not used as a term of endearment, but still used nonetheless. By other people). And then told you were using it wrong, and said you would stop. But here you are. Just like you said you were going to start replying after quotes.
To be fair, he has been doing that.
He had, my bad. His last post was a newspaper quote and it threw me off.
But still shakes fist
What’s the deal with blacks vs. Koreans? I heard a Korean business got targeted and took $700K damage, which the owner doesn’t have in savings and now doesn’t know what to do? I also heard people are taking up donations to help black business owners who got fucked. No help for Koreans? Why? Are Koreans the new Jews?
No shit Sherlock.
I hate to leave “read ‘this’ posts” but this really covers exactly what I was trying to convey, but is done by someone who can actually write and make a meaningful point.
Even the nonviolent ones are still protesting in support of one of the people who was preying on these businesses. Brown might not have been razing them to the ground, but he was still robbing the place.
