The real danger of being a census worker is going to a house in the boonies and getting a 12-gague aimed point-blank at your face. My sister quit the census after that.

I don’t know whether she even has the autistic brother. We don’t hang around outside of work - or really all that much at work. She’s just a casual acquaintance (and obvious attention seeker!) from the lunch room.

In all seriousness, it really can be dangerous being a census taker. I had to go house-to-house in 1990, asking questions on the long form. I’m not sure if they still have a long form. Anyway, one father wasn’t particularly thrilled about my asking how many babies his teenage daughter had. He told me that if I didn’t leave his house in 10 seconds, he would be going upstairs to “get something”.
It makes me churlish to think this, but I totally believe that.

Sheesh. The worst I ever got when I enumerated for the 1990 census was chased by a couple of dogs and hit on by a couple of ugly housewives. I guess I should consider myself lucky that I’m tall.
