The decline of man

Man v. Woman redux w/ longer timelines shows interesting trend:

1800-2008
1700-2008

Yeah, I get similar with pop stars. There’s likely so e underlying trend in sports books, that acts on every sports phrase.

“Feminist” overtakes “housewife” in 1975.

I found adding capital M man to the 1700-2008 graph interesting.

I thought that “suffragette” may have been used more than “feminist” in the early 20th c., but it really wasn’t.

I’m having a little trouble putting this down.

Lord of the Rings vs Star Wars.

This graph of democracy vs Republic must mean something but I don’t know what. Interesting peaks on “democracy”: big ones around the World Wars, then smaller ones in the early 60s and late 90s.

Surely someone will find Afghanistan vs Iran vs Iraq vs Vietnam at least a little interesting.

Actually, there was a period when Suffragette appeared in print more frequently than Feminist, I just had my cases wrong.

OK, I’ll stop now.

Tracking ‘fuck’ from 1700 to 2008 gives an interesting chart.

Checking the sources for 1700-1706 is interesting, did you have a look?

“That we may fuck aud be satisfied, &c. Intimating, that our joy should not be a meer act of charity to them, buc a proper expression of our sense of God’s goodness to our selves w’ho should suck and be satisfied with the glad-tidings of …”

Hm, maybe a lot of those are actually “suck”.

Nissan led Datsun even when the latter term was used for the cars in the USA.

Harpo had a slight lead over Groucho when the Marx Brothers were making films as a team, but Groucho took over about 1945, and hit his peak shortly after he died.

Ralph Kramden was bigger when those lost Honeymooners episodes were discovered than he was during the show’s original run, but he now trails Fred Flintstone despite the Gleason character’s head start.

Tracking fuck, shit, and cunt over the same time is even more interesting. It looks like there was a desert of such words from 1810 to 1950. Must have been a very repressive and up-tight society:

Ha! I thought of that one, too.

MrWhatsit suggested I try:

El Salvador vs. Nicaragua

We also did a whole string of superhero matchups. Aquaman, unsurprisingly, is totally crushed by Batman, but holds his own against Hawkman until Hawkman hits it “big” in the mid-2000s anyway.

The interesting thing about matching up Betty Boop, Bugs Bunny, Mickey Mouse and Popeye for me isn’t that Betty or even Bugs gets crushed. It’s that Popeye gave Mickey a run for his money up until the mid 80s.
