At my job, having a drink at lunch is not a big deal. However, if it was a regular thing for anybody (even once a week), you bet they’d be out on their ass. Luckily the people I work with have the sense to make these kinds of distinctions. That said, I doubt anybody who actually works with chemicals or equipment in the lab would get away with having two drinks at lunch. That’s obvious impairment right there, and would not be tolerated. But having a margarita on your birthday or having wine while dining with a client is fine. ---

Couple of things: To the **OP** : 1.) That sucks. I don’t work in a place where I can imbibe, but I have friends who do. Often, the company foots the bill, but not always. One of my friends has a pretty regular friday lunch complete with alcoholic drink(s) with or without his boss. Another friend worked for a company that would pay for drinks on Fridays. (Actually, they’re both programmers. Hmmmm…) 2.) Because they’ve got nothing better on their plate and it makes them feel good. Most of the ones I have known were bitter, bitter people. I hope things worked out alright for ya. Workplace snitches (who rat you out for their own benefit) suck major ass. What a bunch of uptight people here. I would love to judge all the people slamming this guy for drinking at lunch but you haven’t been as gracious by providing an exact description of your sins. I’ve no doubt that if we were to dig deep enough each and every one of you would have far worse things that you do, maybe even on a daily basis. So please, save the self righteousness. There is nothing wrong with having a couple of drinks as long as you are not impared and can still do your job. How many of you elected to stay up a little later watching a movie or something and then were tired the next day. Not at 100%, huh? Should I have security escort you off the grounds? Its one in the same. ---

But it’s wrong in the sense that if your employer forbids it, you’ve agreed to that condition of your employment, and you violate it. It’s wrong in the same way running a stop light at 3 AM where there’s no one else around for miles is. There’s no moral opprobium associated with it, but if you’re caught, there are consequences. It’s a _practical_ “wrong,” if you will. ---
