Early Mormon leaders had many wives. Joseph Smith had 40 plus. Brigham Young had 57 give or take a few. Another example would be Heber C Kimball who had 65 children by 17 of his 43 wives.
His oldest child was born in 1823 and his youngest was in 1868, so 45 years apart.
One of my ancestors has 21 children with two of his three wives over a 30 year period. The children produced 160 grandchildren for him.
Girls aged 15 and 16 were getting married off and quickly having children with elderly patriarchs. They would often have two sets of children. A few with the patriarch and then more later after they remarried when he would die.
