See, this is why we can’t have nice things. Every time an intelligent, interesting movie for adults is released people are “disappointed” and wish they’d spent their money on mindless high-budget action films instead. No WONDER there aren’t more movies for adults made, or rather, there are, but they’re not distributed much outside of lucky large cities.
You deserve what you get, what you want, and what you support.
I liked both movies, and in general prefer the movies like The Descendants. But honestly, if talking to someone who doesn’t spend a lot of time/money on movies in the theater I’d recommend that they go to MI4.
The Descendants will be degrade much less on a TV.
All that stunning Hawaiian scenery? Are you kidding? I’d much rather see that on a big theater screen than Tom Cruise’s mug.
I should add that I do plan to see MI4 in the theater even though I missed 2 & 3, but I’ll pay for something else. I’d much rather pay for and support films for thinking & feeling adults in hopes that they’ll keep making more of them, rather than films made for BOOMgotcha-loving fanboys.
Good for you. As soon as you’re elected the arbiter of taste for everybody then we’ll start to care more.
But yes. I lived in that stunning Hawaii scenery. I loved seeing it on a big screen (even though Payne didn’t necessarily try to present it in all its glory). And it will degrade less on a TV than MI4 will.
Then why are you planning to see it? Stealing a viewing doesn’t make you principled. It kind of makes you a jerk. Especially if you’re then going to look down your nose at people who have the temerity to admit they want to see it (unlike you, who apparently have to mask the desire to see it as some kind of obligation you’re taking upon yourself so that you can bless us with your informed disdain) and have the gall to disagree with you on a movie that plenty of people haven’t particularly cared for.
I haven’t seen any of the other MI films, but I did see that MI4 has shown up on a number of 2011 top ten film lists. So I figured of the movies that are out right now, it would not be a bad one to catch.
Believe me, I’m not someone who mindlessly queues for the latest blockbuster. That’s why I saw the Descendants in the first place. It was good, too… but it didn’t live up to my high expectations after seeing Payne’s other films.
Date movie. The only Oscar hope for this might be for supporting actress, but otherwise it was pretty ordinary. The oldest daughter and the boyfriend did credible jobs, as did the grandfather, but it was all very predictable.
I liked this pretty well the first time, but we just rewatched it and I liked it even more the second. I enjoyed the gentle pace, George Clooney, the dark humor, and his relationship with the older daughter, which runs counter to the typical family drama cliches.
I don’t watch many movies but I have been told I should watch the movie because I know many people in the same position. Third generation trust holders who have no desire to hold onto lands. Plus there are no Hawaiians in the movie. A movie about Hawaii without Hawaiians makes no sense to me.
The main characters are native-born Hawaiians, as were several generations before them. They’re just white Hawaiians. (I think the term is Haole?) I can’t remember if they go into this in the movie, but in the book, there’s more about their background. The family is descended from the union of a Hawaiian princess and an American missionary of European descent.
There are a handful of native Hawaiian characters, but their roles are fairly small.
