Sleeveless is perfectly appropriate for ladies’ formalwear, and for church (provided we’re talking tailored stuff rather than cotton tank tops.) Backless is perfectly appropriate for formalwear, although not always for church. Strapless is perfectly appropriate for formalwear, and generally appropriate wedding parties, though it’s usually not appropriate for wedding guests or for regular services. Bared midriffs are appropriate for formalwear only if you are 17 and going to the prom, and it really depends on the dress then. Bare midriffs are never appropriate for church. Having a skirt up to your ass like that one guest at my best friend’s wedding, is appropriate for neither formalwear nor church services. Wearing a dress so thin everyone can see your undies and skipping the slip (like that same chick) is appropriate for neither formalwear nor for church services. I think, **Moriah** , you may be making a rather sizeable mistake in assuming that the priest and the rest of the congregation agrees with you on the inappropriateness of sleeveless or strapless eveningwear. You’re the only person I’ve ever heard of having a problem with tasteful, tailored sleeveless blouses, and I grew up in a massively conservative part of the country. I also think that your objections stem more from having armpit phobia than the people in question actually looking like hoochies. ---

Hey! I resent this thread! The last time I tried hyperbole in order to make a point I got threatened with suspension. :mad: I swear, with lots of you there seems to be a higher standard for seriousness on the part of the OP in the Pit than in GD, even. That said, yeah, I get mighty distracted by some of the young ladies at my church. Sure, part of me is glorifying God’s creation (“Down, boy! We need to stand right after this.”) but ALL of me is supposed to be listening to the sermon. ---

I guess that the problem is that a lot of folks can’t tell if this thread is a parody of something (which should have some sort of a link), a joke thread (which, as I understand things, is not allowed in the Pit), or a legitimate rant (which is fine, although I could do without the borderline hate speech). Assuming the genuine rant scenario, you are correct in that it is hilarious to me (although more in the sense that I find getting so worked up about this specific issue funny as all get out). ---

I don’t believe in male-female double standards of dress code (yes, men can wear a kilt and women wear slacks). I have personal disdain for bare armpits in (semi)formal events for men and women. It’s considered inappropriate for men to show their pits in a (semi)formal event (no matter how well tailored the vest) and the shaving of the pits doesn’t warrant a double standard with women, IMO. (Perhaps you’d be OK with bare male pits in semi/formal events if they shaved?) It’s the totally shoulderless tubetop look I’m proclaiming slutty. Mind you, there’s a place for slutty.
