I thought the OP was hilarious. I have problems with the usage of “wigger” to describe a white person dressing in hip-hop wear, but I’ll willing to, for now, chalk that up to ignorance on moriah’s part.

> I’m sorry, when did you become the arbiter of appropriateness and good taste? Isn’t there this line in the Bible that says “Judge not, lest ye be judged”?

Perhaps you mean this:

> [@St. Luke](#):
>
> 6:37 Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven: (KJV)

But also consider Jesus laying the smack down on correcting one another:

> [@St. Matthew](#):
>
> 18:15If your brother sins against you, go and show him his fault, just between the two of you. If he listens to you, you have won your brother over. 16But if he will not listen, take one or two others along, so that ‘every matter may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.’ 17If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the church, treat him as you would a pagan or a tax collector. (RSV)

Or how about a Christian dress code at worship?

> [@St. Paul](#):
>
> 1 Timothy 2:9 I also want women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or expensive clothes, 10but with good deeds, appropriate for women who profess to worship God. (RSV)

Yeah, these quotes need proper interpretation, but it’s not like there’s no holding of one another to some sort of standards.

Evening, **moriah**.

Trust you remember the rest of the routine.

So just scratch & sniff -------\>[sub] **here** [/sub]\<--------------

That, of course, was my lovely and hairy armpit scent. So what say you? Nutsack, armpit, or would you care to try yet another body part? I could scrape-up some deliciously odoriferous toe-jam or aromatic dingleberries if you’d like.

Cheers!

Oh yeah, but we all know Saul (aka Santa Paul) _HaTeD_ **Jesus** and persecuted Him mercilessly. Didn’t stop with **Jesus’** death and ressurection, either. He just taught corruption of **Jesus’** intent!

\*\*Jesus \*\* wanted us to be unashamed and sinless before the **Father,** that’s why he left his burial cloth behind!

**Jesus** wasn’t ashamed of His body, and neither are We True Followers of His Word!

**God** don’t wear clothes! And neither should we! Especially in church!

(Well, we should follow social morés, to avoid being imprisoned, so just get as naked as you can.)

> So, uh, what’s the deal here, exactly? Have they not installed the board’s sense of humor with the recent server change?

Yeah, really.

My reading of the OP: a hyperbolic, cathartic “crazy man rant” as a result of seeing just one too many instances of inappropriate dress at church – and I understood it as NOT meaning properly assembled strapless gowns, but tubes, minis, bellies, see-thrus, pants requiring a full wax job fore and aft in order to be able to walk in them, wifebeaters, and so on.

However, the very instant I laid eyes on it I knew there would be howls of outrage. My hypotheses about the sources of this outrage:

(1) Some people take every word at face value, and indeed believe that **moriah** is seriously arguing that the Bible condemns to Hell people who wear Crotch-Riding Pants, or that people who dress like Li’l Kim are engaged in prostitution (these people need to switch from decaf to the real stuff);

(2) Some people will react to the very fact that the person is talking about respecting the church, as either confirming their worst prejudices against anyone who takes religion seriously, or an opportunity to engage in their hobby of slamming believers in general for failing _the non believer’s expectation of them_;
(2)(a) Or, specifically, Christianity or one of its brands. But dressing like Xtina Aguilera in _“Dirty”_ is equally inappropriate at synagogue or mosque, in _most_ circumstances (\*)

(3) Some people indeed believe that nobody EVER has ANY right to say ANYTHING against how someone dresses in a public venue, AT ALL, period
(3)(a) and some go on further to state that “appropriate” does not exist.

… but the big hot button’s gotta be…

(4) “Sluts”. The word, I mean. That’s it, isn’t it? Had it been phrased as “fashion victims” or some such other term that is not commonly used to impugn moral character, many would have ho-hum-ed and moved on. But nooooo, OP said “sluts”. Break out the torches.
In any case, (A) Yes, people should take some care to dress properly for a religious service, and be respectful of the sensibilities of the more modest in the congregation, (B) No, there is not damn much you can do about it, if the priest/minister finds it acceptable it’s not our job to enforce a dress code and (C) daaay-uuumm do some people dress _badly_, never mind scantily, to public activities these days; that’s inconclusive about their character, but it’s pretty damning about their _taste_…

jrd

(\*) There are circumstances such as, if the service is being held out on the sand at South Beach, beach wear (but keep your tops on) would be perfectly appropriate. If there’s an all-night chapel at the corner down the block from where the two hottest clubs in town are, I should not be surprised if someone in little more than a square foot of leather and half yard of lace stops by for a 4am meditation. If I’m holding a revival in the middle of the public park where all the Boyz hang out, I should expect someone to approach the altar with his boxers showing. Etc.

Moriah, I would like to thank you as this is the funniest thread I have read in a while.

Fortunately I have my own office with a door so noone could hear me laughing at the “…smells exactly like dog breath” line.

I don’t go to church but live close to one, and I wonder what the Hell some people are thinking when they dress. Are they trying to hook up at church?

What are they: Holy Ho’s? Righteous skank? Getting jiggy in the name of Jesus?

Must be my fundy Anabaptist upbringing.

Rock on.

OK, I don’t have a problem with people wearing cool, comfortable clothing in the summertime, but really, people, when you’re in church, cover up!!!

My church has a very strict dress code- no sleeveless tops/dresses, skirts/Bermudas must come to the knee. We also have a little basket o’ shawls at the front just as you enter the sanctuary with a sign politely asking folks (primarily women, men don’t seem to be as prone to coming in inadequately covered) to please put one on “if you were unable to dress appropriately”.

Stunning numbers of women breeze right past the little sign and basket and come into the church wearing low-cut dresses and blouses, spaghetti straps, etc. When this happens, one of the older ladies will go to the basket, fetch a shawl and drape it over the woman’s shoulders. It’s usually visitors who do this, the regulars respect the rules.

The younger women in our congregation almost seem to see wearing one of the Basket Shawls as a fashion statement. They will come in in their spaghetti straps and grab one of the very plain, rectangular shawls from the basket and put it on for the liturgy. Why they do this instead of buying a nice, fashionable shawl and wearing it to church, I don’t know. They seem to have an attitude that looking a bit dowdy in the Basket Shawls is cool.

Ofcourse they do, church is where the reiligious find husbands is it not?
The thing I hate is hypocracy - the Tongans in my low socioeconomic area are regular church goers and have very strict dress codes, but when it comes to parenting their children, nothing much seems to be going on with many. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mean that lack of parenting is specific to this group, it’s just the incongruence from my heathen eyes, of being pious and strict for god, but not for your children.

Take the tone out of the OP, and I agree with the gist of it. There are certain places in society where one should be dressed conservatively and, well, decent. Church is one. Court is another, and when you go to the bank to sign loan papers, and so on. On the other hand, the more sleeveless tops and short shorts running around the mall on an August Saturday afternoon, the better.

It’s fun to see what people assume. I prefer to let the words be unengendered so that they stand by themselves.

Notice how some of my detractors make attacks based on their assumption of my gender. That show shows how weak their arguments (and minds) are.

I agree with this. It seems rather obvious, actually.

Now, having said that, I have been known to dress in “humble” garb (jeans and loose-fitting top) to church, so it isn’t as if I’m super picky or conservative. I just think that there’s a big difference between a clean, not-too-tight t-shirt and clean, not-too-tight jeans and a belly shirt or tube top, where everything is hangin’ out. In some cases, I wore what I wore because I was going to work right after church, and my t-shirt and jeans was an appropriate work outfit.
