“So let’s get this straight, we will fight for our right to wear anything (or nothing) in church, right brothers (or sisters)?” “But you don’t even want to go to church, let alone wear a bare midriff and a low cut top!” “Yes, but we will fight for our right to do this.” (thanks Monty Python) It sounds like some of you need to spend some time in countries where there are dress codes eg in Japan, no sleeves is not always acceptable and barefeet is a no no. What’s the big deal about having a simple dress code in a church - and I’m not even religious. Some people just get stuck fighting for their rights all the time. ---

Here’s a New England atheist raised Congregationalist chiming in. Growing up in the 1950s and '60s, it was a matter of course that one would dress up for church rather than wearing everyday casual clothing. Perhaps that early indoctrination is why I feel it’s disrespectful to look slovenly in church. If I happened to find myself attending a church service today, I’d take care to dress conservatively well for it, simply as a matter of courtesy and respect for the feelings of other church-goers. My own lack of faith has zilch to do with my feelings on this. ---

If the OP had taken the tack that you did, this thread would have died a quick death, but it’s clear that he/she is in it to provoke and antagonize, and I’m feeling more than a little foolish for taking the bait. Thanks for the chime in there **polycarp** although I’m not the kind of person you describe, I am careful to _try_ and not judge, which is why I amended my statement. Unlike the OP, judging people based on meaningless superficial tripe just ain’t my bag. ---

What, **catsix** read things into a post that aren’t there and deliberately misrepresent the poster’s position, then rant against her own misrepresentations in the shrillest possible fashion? Perish the thought, she would never do a thing like that, except on a regular basis. Not sure I get the point about the abaya, though. It just looks like your basic modest dress, only with lots of shiny stuff, and I love that bonnet thing that goes with it. Actually, I think I want one. It’s beautiful. I’d wear something like that to church on a really festive occasion, like Christmas or Easter. And really, anyone who is offended by the notion that a person should dress, you know, modestly in church really needs to have their head examined. I see lots of clothing that I really wouldn’t consider “slutty” that would still be inappropriate for church wear. And my church is very much “casual wear”- t-shirts and jeans are the norm. I wear long dresses in the summertime mostly for comfort (really, gals, you shoud try this. It is actually much cooler and more comfortable than shorts and tank top, because you get air circulation and protection from the sun) and jeans and a t-shirt with the church’s logo on it in the winter (lots of Catholic churches sell t-shirts as a fundraiser). ---

I thought OP’s here were **supposed** to provoke and antagonize, esp. with amusing hyperbole and exaggerated aggression such as **moriah** ’s. And I didn’t know that it was considered desirable for OP’s to be phrased in such a way that their threads “die a quick death”. I thought a prolonged brawl like this one was considered a sign of success in a Pit thread, at least as long as there’s enough funny stuff in it.
