Using the search function on a word you’ve seen someone use over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over is a pretty low bar for “stalking”. ---

For some the definition of ‘stalking’ is seeing the same people responding to your posts in multiple threads. Which, given the size of this message board and the number of active posters, means that unless the thread is, basically, not interesting the frequency of seeing the same group of posters approaches certainty. I don’t know if it’s possible for the ‘stalking’ bar to get any lower than that. ---

I’ve been posting a lot this week and I kind of have this rule of thumb that the more I post on the Straight Dope, the worse my mental health. I’m not saying the Dope causes poor mental health. I can tell you exactly what it is. I use the drama here as a distraction from the anxieties of my daily life. It’s not all bad, sometimes I would just rather be watching or engaging in stimulating conversation than writing three state grant applications. But I’ve been so stressed about these applications and my ongoing concentration difficulties that it goes from a minor distraction to a compulsive behavior. Does anyone else do this? (I did well today. I mediated first thing, then I worked six hours straight on those grants with no use of my phone. I told myself I couldn’t post until 3pm. So at least it contains the behavior.) ---

I once accidentally exposed a sock when someone mentioned somebody who was always talking about Hawaii with a “l”. I pointed out that she probably was thinking of Didi44. Turns out that Didi44 and lyngui were the same person. But their posting styles and repeated subjects were distinctive and obvious enough that while I knew it was the same person I didn’t even notice that he was using two different names. Personally I feel like I’ve struck the right relationship with this message board, recently. One thing that gets annoying is that I think a lot of people here assume you’re giving your point-of-view in bad faith, or something. A lot of people, (of course, not all), assume you’re absolutely tied to a belief and get nasty right from the start, treating you like a fucking idiot to have dared been under a different impression than them. Like, right or wrong, treating people so starkly is not often a good method in changing their opinion.
