I washed dishes for a chef that used to melt the milk, butter and seasonings together before putting in the mashed potatoes - they were the best mashed potatoes I’ve ever had. (I was a green teenager at the time, and didn’t even appreciate the level of his cooking. {Heavy sigh}) ---

Heh. If there was ANYWHERE that I could get a recipe for “Mashed Po-Fucking-Tatos”, it would have to be the SDMB. (And thanks, **Zenster** , I will use that recipe someday!) **Avabeth** , I’m always up for a family. And I never met my grandparents, so your grandfather would be a welcome addition. 😃 And I think **RTFirefly** is onto something there. I’ll gladly trade two of my sisters for two slightly used brothers. (I deal better with guys than girls, anyways.) But you can’t have innocent sister, as she is the mom of my favorite neice. ---

Well, **Zenster** , those are definitely **Mashed Po-fucking-tatoes**. Because as I mentioned many posts ago, I had a serious craving, and now that you’ve posted that recipe I crave them even more…BUT I have no _po-fucking_ clue what a “cube” of butter is! Please explain. You’re dealing with a pregnant woman’s cravings here… ---

[hijack] You know what really gets my goat? Recipies that give directions like “Properly cooked potatoes will **not quite slide off** of the fork when speared.” How the hell am I supposed to know when that is? They don’t seem to slide off the fork when they’re raw, either. I mean, I don’t go around giving people driving directions by saying, “Now drive past exit 42, turn around and go back because you should have gotten off at exit 42.” grrrr. [/hijack] Just so we’re all on the same page, that should be taken as a humorous reply. No offense, oh master of the recipes. Oh, and I believe a cube of butter is a tablespoon, right? ---

oh and a cube of butter? I always assumed that was a chunk of butter (taken from the typical rectangles) that is as long as it is wide. However, at Chez Baboon, more butter is better. ---

A cube of butter is a quater pound of butter or 1/2 cup of butter. A pat of butter is about a tablespoon, mor eor less. Kallessa (who also cooks, though not as well as Zenster, of course) ---

Heck, I even know how to _do_ the Mashed Potato. It’s not entirely like the twist, as you’re sort of grinding each foot into the ground… and I was born in the 70s. Why do I know these things? Personally, for my +best+ mashed potatos, I take leftover baked potatos, cut 'em into slices about two inches thick, cut those in quarters, mash with the skins on, and add some nice sharp cheddar. Mmmm. ---

For the life of me I can’t understand why anybody would get upset over the mashed po-fucking-tatoes. It’s just so irrational. **Everybody** knows it’s the gravy that matters. If the gravy is bad, then the meal is ruined. You are making gravy right? You **have** to make gravy. I need some gra-fucking-vy right now! ---
