In one of the high schools I attended there was a tradition of each graduating class picking a mascot to represent themselves. My grade’s mascot was “Quantum Sheep”. The previous year’s mascot had been “The Codfather”, a fish in a fedora. ---

I **was** the school mascot for a short while. Imagine a costume that includes orange tights and swim fins. **Go Orioles!** ---

I went to Riverdale! From what I understand, the school opened in the mid-60’s, and the original principal wanted to avoid any confusion with the confederate flag sort of rebels. After Braveheart came out, the mascot was pretty much changed into a guy in costume like those in the movie. The Scottish theme might also be because their primary rival is are the Fighting Irish, but that’s just a guess. ---

Apparently in Japan, the word “Spartan” is used almost exclusively in reference to prisons and such, so when I tell people what my high school mascot was, they think I either went to reform school or some ultra-hardcore military academy. My college mascot? The Crimson. Nothing but a freakin’ color. Not even a Crimson Something, like Alabama gets. Just Crimson. ---

My sainted grandmother was from Mabou! Well, OK, slightly south, Glencoe Mills. Her niece is still a nun there at the giant convent and school on the hill and two of her sisters are buried in the churchyard by the foot (Grandma ended up in Brooklyn). Anyway, to continue in fictional mode, Al Bundy and No Ma’am once lost (of course) a game to the Pink Ladies of Jackie Onassis High School. The plot was that the Ladies brought in ringers–real actual pro players–so you had the likes of Bubba Smith and Lawrence Taylor in bright pink uniforms and helmets! IRL, what the hell is a hoya, as in the Georgetown Hoyas? Apparently you’re supposed to yell “Saxa Hoya!” at the games. ---

Well let’s talk about what teams should be called. Around here we have a school named after a Scottish gentleman and their mascot is the Highlanders. I think the football team should be called the Berserkers and have a Blue Pict on their helmets. We also have a town called Spring around here. Everytime I pass their stadium and see “Spring Lions” printed really big there I think that they should have been the Spring Chickens. I haven’t looked at the link but is there any school with a cow as it’s mascot? The cheerleaders could be the Heifers and the football teams could be the Mad Cows. ---
