It’s been a long time since an [art installation](http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2429903/Peace-Day-Reminder-millions-lives-lost-war-artists-stencil-9-000-bodies-Normandy-beach.html?ICO=most_read_module) affected me so deeply.

It started out small, but once the locals got word, they joined up _en masse_.

And then…well, read the last paragraph and you understand why I found it so deeply moving

A terrific idea well executed. I give it a 10/10.

I like it, but why 9,000? Is that just the number they could fit in the space or time available? Because it doesn’t appear to have any direct correspondence to numbers I can find about D-day losses.

Remember, this includes the German losses as well. From the [D-day fact sheet](http://www.nationalww2museum.org/media/press-releases/d-day-fact-sheet.html) of the World War II Museum in New Orleans

> [@](#):
>
> Casualties (Numbers represent total killed, wounded, missing or captured)
>
> United States – 6,603 (1,465 killed)
> United Kingdom – 2,700
> Canada – 1,074 (359 fatal)
> Germany – Estimated between 4,000 – 9,000
