So, just because something can be done about obesity, it means that the shitheads who torment fatties are not creeps for tormenting someone who is minding their own business? Or that the people who are getting tormented somehow are “asking for it”, or that they should not deserve as much sympathy, because they _could_ change themselves, (and thus avoid the ire of little bullying shitheads) and they haven’t done that? Surely you don’t mean that.

See, this attitude really pisses me off. I don’t care what the hell someone is, whether they are a 6’ man wearing evening gowns and heels, or a fat kid, just because they _don’t “fit in”_ and don’t “do something about it” (i.e. “conform”), it doesn’t mean that they _deserve_ the crap they get.

I never did understand the mindset (and I’m not saying you feel this way, Weirddave, I’m just rambling now) that the _victim_ of abuse, bullying and torment must be the one to change. I always thought that the people who _go out of their way_ to be mean shitheads should change. They are the ones causing the distress and trouble, not the people who are minding their own business, while daring to be seen in public while fat, (or wearing an evening gown, or whatever).

And I don’t give a rat’s ass how “weird” the “victims” are, or how easily they chould change (lose weight, stop wearing evening gowns, whatever). They should still be able to go through their everyday life without being tormented. And those who torment them should get _all_ the censure and ire.

Regarding the OP: I’m with Coldfire on this one. I don’t blame the OP for noticing that the hit-and-run bitch was fat. I’d probably notice too. But I think that hours after the fact, he’d have more sense than to ramble on a little too long about the bitch, and her kids. And clearly, she’s a bitch. She deserves to be pitted. And my sympathies to the OP. But really–her fatness has nothing to do with her behavior, any more than the color of her dress, the color of her hair, or what kind of shoes she wears.

How about being muslim? Or jewish? Or hindu.

Last time I checked, it was a fairly straight forward thing for a person to convert religions _in America_.

Are those groups not entitled to be outraged at abuse because they could change religions?

It’s completely under my control to become a born-again Christian. If someone attacks me because I don’t, is that my fault or theirs?

And don’t even bother playing the holocost card. I’ve already said that abuse suffered because of excess weight is in no way equal to being exterminated in a Nazi death camp.

I will say that being murdered because of your weight is as bad as being murdered because you are gay. Period. If anyone can find offense in that statement, they are trying _WAY_ too hard.

Taxguy, current bariatric research would disagree with you. Being morbidly obese or even fat is not a matter of conscientiousness or character.

As I said earlier, I used to be morbidly obese. I was for approximately twenty-five years before bariatric surgery (which has a mortality rate equal to that of heart surgery) reduced my stomach to the size of an egg and shorted my intestines to limit caloric absorption.

But I have driven for 43 years and never had a moving violation. I taught for twenty years in inner city neighborhoods that were so dangerous that you could not get a newspaper or a pizza delivered. That’s pretty conscientious. My own family talks about once I make up my mind to do something, I do it. It is a character trait that comes from being strong-willed. And yet, I could not lose weight and keep it off. That is true for 95% of the people who lose weight by dieting and exercise according to my bariatric specialist.

Most people know that gay-bashing and race-bashing are unacceptable, but fat people are considered fair game – even here at SDMB where intelligent people should know better.

**Coldfire** I doubt that this thread would have remained open if the heading had referred to a Moronic Nigger Bitch, as well it shouldn’t.

Those of you who claim that obesity is a choice for most fat people are speaking from a place of ignorance. That has been endlessly discussed in threads here, but some of you just don’t get it. Fat-bashing is so common that some of you are blind to the damage it causes.

Although I am a feminist, I did not object to the woman being called a bitch; she acted like one. But she didn’t “act fat.”

Reaserch from organizations trying to sell you a procedure to replace self control and exercize aren’t the most unbiased, y’know?

I’m happy it worked for you, but make no mistake, _unless you have an extenuating medical condition_ it didn’t do a damn thing for you that cutting your caloric intake and increasing your exercize level would have done. It just works faster and doesn’t require any willpower.

Again, a biased source. News flash: It is physically impossible not to lose weight if you eat less calories and burn more. IT’S JUST A PAIN TO DO.

I’m not fat bashing, but I’m not going to buy into the victim mentality Oh-it’s-not-my-fault bullshit either. Eat less, exercize more, keep it up, don’t cheat and you’ll lose weight, PERIOD. ( As before, unless there is a medical condition that prevents this )

What, and in Canada they have quotas that you have to fill?

While religion _can be_ a conscious choice, for most people it a part and parcel of who they are from their earliest childhood.

Look, I’m not defending fat bashing any more than I would defend gay bashing or Jew bashing or Black bashing.

BUT

Baring a medical condition, obesity is a result of the choices an individual makes reguarding lifestyle, diet and activity level. It’s under an individual’s control. Race, sexual orientation, ethnicity, etc… are not. That’s a key difference and bombast and hysteria on your part will not change that basic fact.

I think being murdered for an reason is pretty much equally sucky for the victim.

If I may ask, how is this in any way relevant? No one said “it’s not this woman’s fault she’s fat!”, they said “it’s wrong to say mean things about fat people as a group just because this particular fat person hit your car”.

Don’t be too sure about that. I had a “hot chick” (hot by plastic Californian standards ™, my tastes run a little different) almost run into me today on my way to work. Note that I was on a bike and in the bike lane (she decided it was a free area to ameka new lane at a stop sign with a long line). I was rather bothered by this, as you may well guess.

Had I started a pit thread on this (I restrain becuase as a bicylist I could start a pit thread about drivers every week), I most likely would have included some nasty comments about her thinking she was “too pretty to need to drive safely”, or that she was “too busy putting on the latest Vogue-reccommended lipstick to drive like a sensible human being”. I guess my actions could lkead to me being a beauty-basher, or lead to the inevitable death of the pretty. I’m contributing to the next Columbine.

I would have (and at the time I was) been just as mean as the OP, except I needed more words.

I promised myself I would stay out of this thread, but I lied LOL

Whether this post was a sarcastic one or not, IS it ever ok to call random people names?

I am one of those fat people who got fat due to illness, You would never know just looking at me, Or that I used to weigh 377 pounds, and that I have lost more than 100, all one would see is a Fat Chick. In fact I can be even more relevent. I hit someones car today. I did not hit the other persons car because I am fat. My fat did not make me a bad driver, Nor did my fat make me stupid and not pay attention to what I was doing.(truth be told, my passenger side car door came open while I was driving) Even if I was fat because I ate 50 cheeseburgers a day, what does that have to do with my driving? Prob not too much unless I hit a car because I could not see through the mass of burgers.

In 1992, the **National Institutes of Health** convened a Technology Assessment Conference to study which weight-loss methods were most effective.
One of their conclusions was that “There are no diets that can be considered to be effective treatment in the long run.”(National Institutes of Health Technology Assessment Conference Panel, “Methods for Voluntary Weight Loss and Control,” Annals of Internal Medicine, 116: 943-949.)

The Council of Size and Weight Discrimination ( [http://www.cswd.org/](http://www.cswd.org/) )
is a nonprofit organization. According to the CSWD, "Fatphobia and weight discrimination are based on the false assumption that a person could lose weight if they would simply ‘use will power and stop being so self-indulgent’. **The scientific fact, confirmed over and over in rigorous, controlled studies, and published in peer-reviewed journals, is that there is no currently known method of weight loss that is effective and permanent."**

Your logic is similar to the Carl Sandburg idea of “If we had some ham, we could have some ham and eggs, if we had some eggs.”

The obesity **is** the medical condition that you speak of.

Zoe, you said:

I would add the following coda: “without a permanent lifestyle change”, and if you are still claiming that absent a medical condition, an otherwise healthy adult can not lost weight and keep it off by changing their eating and lifestyle ( primary activity level ) habits, I would question that. As far as I know, if you burn more calories than you eat ( in broad terms ), you will lose weight.
