The Feud: Items in a Junk Drawer [Game Over]

Easy.

Get everything into a new excel sheet, numbers and all. Next to each and every entry, put their name. So take this list, plug it into Excel:

NOT AN ENTRY:

  1. dead hookers
  2. elephants
  3. big rig truck
  4. The Astrodome
  5. The Pyramids at Giza
  6. Abe Vigoda
  7. Empire State Building
  8. Sadness
  9. gold dubloons
  10. a pirate

Next to every entry, put my name, so it looks like this:

1. dead hookers Munch
2. elephants Munch
3. big rig truck Munch
4. The Astrodome Munch
5. The Pyramids at Giza Munch
6. Abe Vigoda Munch
7. Empire State Building Munch
8. Sadness Munch
9. gold dubloons Munch
10. a pirate Munch

Now, highlight the column of answers. The first goal is to eliminate any double spaces after periods (for those who still do that out of habit), but maintain the spaces in phrases like “Empire State Building”. So do a find of " " (two spaces) and replace it with " " (one space).

Then do a search of ". " (period and a space) and replace it with nothing. That column should now look like this:

1dead hookers
2elephants
3big rig truck
4The Astrodome
5The Pyramids at Giza
6Abe Vigoda
7Empire State Building
8Sadness
9gold dubloons
10a pirate

Now you (after making sure no entries use numbers as part of the actual answer) just go through and delete the numbers doing a find and replace. We’ll work on the pivot part later.

Ok - that’s easy enough. The first part is what I do already. The stripping away the numbers is easy enough. Thanks.

What’s next? (I have to leave in two hours, and I don’t know when I’ll get back online. Probably tomorrow sometime - but I’m taking a vacation day tomorrow and it’s my hubby’s birthday. I don’t know my schedule.)

  1. batteries
  2. string
  3. scissors
  4. tape
  5. paper clips
  6. rubber bands
  7. can opener

  3. rubber bands
  4. twist-ties
  5. coins
  6. screws
  7. scratch paper
  8. broken toys
  9. glue
  10. pens
  1. Give the columns headings (Items, Doper).
  2. I copied the list and repeated it, making a list of 20, and gave the new 10 your name, just to make this work better. I also changed Dolores’ “a pirate” to “a ninja”.
  3. Highlight the two columns.
  4. Go to “Data” in the toolbar, click “PivotTable and PivotChart Report…”
  5. Click “Next”, “Next”, “Layout”.
  6. Click and drag “Items” over to the “ROW” section.
  7. Click and drag “Doper” over to the “DATA” section (should now read “Count of Doper”).
  8. Click “OK” and then “Finish”.

You should now have a list that looks like this:

Count of Doper
Items Total
a ninja 1
a pirate 1
Abe Vigoda 2
big rig truck 2
dead hookers 2
elephants 2
Empire State Building 2
gold dubloons 2
Sadness 2
The Astrodome 2
The Pyramids at Giza 2
(blank)
Grand Total 20

Oh jeez - I have Office 2007. Now I’ll have to translate all the commands… I’m sure I can figure it out though.

I want to do this, because it will be a different kind of game - not a Feud. We’ll call it Top Ten or something…

Oooh, Office 2007… I have that at home. I’ll try to translate everything tonight for you.
