> Two quibbles about popular/unpopular choices: Was anyone really influenced by Buddy Holly for his _guitar playing_? And how could no one else have chosen the Velvet Underground, who are the very definition of influential? You know the line: only a couple of thousand people bought their albums, but everyone who did went out and formed a band. 🆒

Although I didn’t select him, Buddy Holly was a massive influence for the guitar style of eveyone that followed. Think of the “galloping” in Peggy Sue or the deliberately sloppy, angry strumming in “That’ll be the Day” that influenced all rock guitar players that followed.

While the Who was the obvious answer after the Beatles and the Stones, all the other answers perplexing as well. In reality, Velvet Underground would deserve more credit but that list is a little strange.

Major Quibble…
I love The Tap, I saw the movie in the theatre, when it was originally released bought it on VHS and DVD and can recite probably half the scenes line by line. I have the soundtrack on CD, I can play all the songs on guitar (or bass), and I have seen them live on a couple of occasions.
That all being said, It’s a comedic satire about a fictional band, a “mockumentary” of late 70’s and early 80’s rock and heavy metal bands. It has no significance in the history of rock and did not influence the genre because it was a skewed reflection of the music at that particular moment in time.

Well, I guess you have a good point there. But I would have thought his guitar influence came a distant fourth behind his singing, his songwriting, and even his image.
