I picked it up in the bargain DVD bin at Walmart, knowing nothing about it really – just knowing that it sounded interesting and had Kiefer Sutherland and Reese Witherspoon.
I liked it a lot, too. A fun twisted Red Riding Hood motif. And Kiefer definitely does creepy quite well.
No, the film premiered at Sundance in January '96, while Suddenly Susan didn’t premier until later that fall.
I saw it when it first got a really limited release (who knows? maybe at the Roxie too!) and remember having a ball. I remembered Reese, of course, from Man in the Moon but what a transformation! She needs to play more roles like that again.
I love this movie. Reese is one of my favorite actors and I think she’s terrific in this.
Watched it again a couple of weeks ago with mr.stretch wandering in and out of the room: “What happend to Keifer–wasn’t he just giving the girl a ride?” “Why is she in jail if Keifer tried to molest her?” “How’d she get out of juvie?” “What happened to Keifer now?” “Is that Brooke Shields?”
Honey, you have to watch the movie–its not one that you can track while you are wandering around the house!

Yeah, but Hail Ants was claiming that Brooke Shields was almost unknown at the time. She wasn’t. This may have been just before her return to stardom, but she wasn’t remotely an unknown.
It’s funny, smart, different and dark. The only thing I didn’t like was the ending. So she kills the guy, and then suddenly everything’s all right? She’s got a man locked in her trunk, people!
Saw this thread, and it reminded me of the great acting job Kiefer did in The Vanishing. I think he developed his Jack Bauer character by drawing on Wolverton and Harriman. Also, the chemistry and dynamic Kiefer had with Jeff Bridges in the Vanishing was great. I’d love to see them together in something, again. Their styles just coalesce and draw charge.
