Curse you, Trebek!
No, I understood that point – I was unclear about the* mechanics * of how to enter bets, and then enter answers.

So, let’s see–lot of guesses.
#2 - I picked the person I’d never heard of
#3 - All I could think of was magpie, so guessed pie
#4 - Well, I’m pretty sure dog is in the zodiac and dog/cat is a good rivalry. I suppose it’s the mongoose vs snake, but that’s pretty obscure
#5 - absolutely no clue
#10 - another WAG; my first thought was Eritrea
Not nearly as many players as a Feud, of course, but I knew that going in - it takes so little time to contribute to a Feud. That’s one of its attractions, plus the fact that you take a lot less time thinking of questions!
I apologize for the fules confusion; I can see I could’ve been clearer about the process I had in mind: read the first post, put your wagers in the Quick Reply window (or in another window/tab with the reply window), go to the second post, highlight the spoiler box, and then put in your answers. Some of you did figure that out, but I’ll find a way to rewrite that.
Now for the answers. Every question was answered correctly by at least one person. I think that speaks well of the range and difficulty (it looks like #5 was the most difficult by far, though I’m not sure if it was TOO difficult - it’s hard to say). I’m surprised I got it close to right.
-
HEADLINES: What is “Dewey Defeats Truman”? (This and #10 were the most straightforward, I think.)
-
THE OSCARS: Who is Eric Idle? (John Candy was in JFK, Brent Spiner in The Aviator, Topher Grace in Traffic, Vin Diesel in Saving Private Ryan, and OJ Simpson in The Towering Inferno - yes, it was nominated for Best Picture. I love that fact!)
-
FOOD AND DRINK: What is pie? (Any sort of pie I decided to count correctly. The clues here were the original name of “coffins,” suggesting an enclosed food, and the bird magpie (and its behavior’s relationship to the making of a pie).
-
MYTHOLOGY: What is the cat? (The “tricker,” of course, was the rat.)
-
ASIA: What is Hong Kong? (Bauhina blakeana, as you might’ve guessed from the structure of the phrase, is the taxonomic name - of a flower native to Hong Kong.)
-
TERM ORIGINS: What is the grandfather clock? (The song, “My Grandfather’s Clock.”)
-
BRITISH LORDS: Who is Lord Frederick Arthur Stanley? (His contribution, of course, was the Stanley Cup. He was also Governor-General of Canada, but that would’ve been a dead giveaway.)
-
COMPOSERS: What is Modest? (As in Mussorgsky. I didn’t know Modest was even THAT common a Russian name.)
-
TV CRIME FIGHTERS: Who is Lieutenant Columbo? (Father Dowling was a good guess, but that would’ve been a little too easy. :))
-
AFRICAN GEOGRAPHY: What is Djibouti?
As for the scores, we have a slight problem. The winner could technically be considered to be astorian, but… you’ll see below.
HongKongFooey: $90,100
Omniscient: $127,500
astorian: $53,000/$140,600
Purgatory Creek: $103,000
tarragon918: $101,600
twickster: $83,000
Sternvogel: $101,000
42fish: $120,000
Happy Lendervedder: $98,990
RoOsh: $60,433
Thudlow Boink: $90,000
as_u_wish: $134,000
You might wonder at the two secores for astorian. The first is his “real” score, because he didn’t phrase his answers in the form of a question, which even the most confused players actually did! The second is what his score could’ve been had he done so!
So I’m officially going to award this to as_u_wish, with hearty congratulations. However, I’m also going to award a “Very Close!” honorary award to astorian for his smarts and strategy, which you COULD say pulled him to victory - if you’re merciful about the question thing!
Thanks to those who participated! Hope you had fun! Maybe I’ll try this again some other time!
This must be obvious to Americans but I had no clue . I don’t have any excuse for the other 9 though
Thank you for taking the time to organize it, I look forward to trying again.
I’m amazed I did so well given that I missed a lot of answers. How about if astorian and I share our ill-gotten gains?
Thank you so much for doing this. I hope we can do it again.
No, DON’T be merciful! Trebek wouldn’t have been, and you DID spell out the rules clearly enough.
Fun game- thanks for letting me play.
My initial reaction for number 7 was the Stanley Cup(and I knew that the year was dead on), but I said to myself, that was the Earl of Stanley, not Derby. :smack:
