Yes. It’s particularly important to take measures against the flu when you’re in contact with the elderly or other at-risk groups. You’re not just protecting yourself - you’re protecting the people around you.
It’s a problem with several facets. First we pick up the meals at a local senior center, which is jammed with older folks on Fridays, along with the volunteer and paid staff on hand who have handled the food containers. There are door handles to deal with, etc. We leave from there to the delivery point where we grab a wheeled cart that has been used by residents and staff throughout the week, then go push the elevator button, get in, push the floor button, rinse, repeat for six floors.
While the dispensers are useful, there are multiple people on each floor that get meals, so running back to the elevator dispenser isn’t practical. Most residents come to the door, but some need us to just come in to deliver and that’s where cross-contamination can occur (touching doorknobs, etc.), which endangers the occupants. I need to start carrying my own container of Purell on Fridays, I guess. I hate being even the least bit germophobic, but self preservation dictates it.
