Of course shit is going to happen, but that doesn’t mean we don’t have some control of at least some of what happens and some control over the impact. We know we’re going to die, as we’ve known since the dawn of our existence, and yet human civilization still keeps trying to find ways to make life longer and more pleasant. Yeah, society can, but as that article’s author so adroitly points out, Americans (a majority of white Americans, to be specific) reject the idea of any kind of society at all. I think the chief problem is that any notion of an American “society” is established on a foundation of race-based capitalist hierarchy. Now that whites have had to share more and more of their physical space and their economic and political power with non-whites in ways that are impossible to ignore, a majority of whites want “their” country back, and they’re willing to resort to all sorts of tactics to keep it. ---

I think we would have some pretty strong disagreements, however, on who is doing the producing and who is doing the destroying. Either way, I do get the feeling we are headed into a modern dark age. If society does recover several hundred years from now, they will look back and see Trump for what he is, a modern day Emperor Diocletian and Constantine rolled into one. The man who triggered the whole thing. Fortunately for us, this isn’t 476 CE with the barbarians at the gate. It’s more like a combo of 285 CE and 313 CE, when Diocletian split the Empire up and Constantine declared Christianity the religion of the Empire. Unless we return to having good presidents (hint, Obama will likely go down as the last good one if Biden loses), the rest of the story is just a formality, and soon we will be at our 476 CE. ---

Another difference is that in 476, there was all this oil and minerals around waiting to be discovered. If we fall, then if anyone rebuilds from the ashes, we’ve already taken all the easy to get to resources. ---

I think we probably missed that opportunity. Even if you were take away Trump and COVID, there are still huge catastrophic problems that the US not only wasn’t addressing, but actively preventing the rest of the world from addressing. To quote the thread “The World is Fucking Fucked!” ---
